modern marvel
« on: May 20, 2012, 12:56:44 PM »
Well I am looking for a symetrical piece to drill but i am not sure if this is the ball I want. I won this ball in a raffle yesterday. Tell me some good and bad about this ball. I typically throw a lot of brunswick dv8 stuff. So I am not use to/like to open the ball up in the fronts when I can keep from it. I have found I need to do that with a lot of storm balls. Any input would be great. Thanks

The Modern Marvel has been a good choice on a lot of medium to medium-heavy conditions and it has a stronger symmetrical core in it.  Typically most Storm balls tend to give a little more length and be more angular off the spot as compared to its sister company Roto Grip, which has more of a hard arcing motion.

With that being said, the Modern Marvel is clean up front and will pick up a little earlier than the Marvel Pearl.  At the same time, it will give more length than the solid and is controllable.  It also tends to keep energy in the back and be more controllable compared to some of the other balls they have, giving more of a hard arcing motion compared to being just angular.

Now, the drawback sometimes with hybrids is that if there is too much volume, hybrids can skid too much down the lane and thus blow through the breakpoint.  Also, hybrids sometimes if the lane gets too dry can still overreact.  That is where knowing where and when to use them becomes important.  However, the surface is easy to adjust and layouts can be tweaked to give you a wider range of conditions.  I have had success going up the boards or opening the lane up with other Storm hybrids (Hy-Road) and don't think it would be an issue for you.

The Modern Marvel has proven to be a good ball.  I would just talk with your driller, let them know where you want to fit it within the arsenal.  From there, it can be set up to fit your strengths.

My modern is drilled 40* 4.5" 25* and I primarily use it on Heavy-Medium Heavy patterns.  Really digs into the midlane and retains enough energy for a good hard flip into the pocket.  The only thing I don't really like about it is its not really surface friendly for me.  For my style, it rolls at its best at 1000.  With that said, I definitely need the inside angle and good oil.  Any other surface it get too squirrely for my tastes.

I absolutely love my Moder Marvel.  Dual Angle 75*3-1/2*45 P3 Hole.  I bought is a a replacement for my C300 Outburst, but OOB hooked more than any ball in my bag.  Both the Outburst and Modern Marvel are dilled the same.  Both sanded to 4000.  Use my Outburst on Med-Dry to Med oil and my Modern Marvel on Med to Med Heavy.  No problems carrying from any angle, outside to inside.  Got my Modern Marvel and only threw one ball in practice for Assn Tournament on team and it hooked out of my hand.  Put it away till next day.  Started at the 15 and moved left.  225-300-227 in doubles.  Never had to move more than 3 boards in 6 games.  I am about 15 mph with 325 revs.  Did I say I love my Modern Marvel?

We did a full review with Digitrax and video here:

I can echo a lot of what's being said about this ball.  Very predictable and consistent motion.  It tells you what's happening on the lanes.  You can read the midlane but the ball still has plenty of punch for good entry angle.

You'll have to decide whether this is the reaction you're looking for.  Throwing more direct is a balance of your game, the condition, and the ball.  This is not a weak ball so if you are bowling on dry conditions, you'll have to throw "away" a bit.  You can see how we use it on the USBC Championship pattern fairly direct as well as from deeper.

modern marvel rolls as sweet as the marvel pearl, for me it blends the lane out.

Until I get my IQ tour this is the first ball out of my bag. Ball is very clean through the fronts and mids.

That's pretty much how mine is drill how the one in the video is. Pin down, pin 5" away and marked the mass bias and located that 5" away also. My pap is 5 3/4 and 1up.

Yeah, that's a good control layout, especially if you have crisp backends.  This ball worked extremely well on the 2012 USBC Championship pattern which is 39 feet and 2:1 ratio.

Can anyone compare the modern to the victory road solid and or the critical theory. Thanks for any help.

The Critical Theory is the strongest and sharpest of the 3 by far.  Critical is a dull pearl cover with a core that has a defined move at the breakpoint.  It's controllable, but defined and strong at the breakpoint.
The Modern Marvel and Victory Road will be a bit more similar, but the Victory Road is a bit cleaner up front with a rounded booming reaction.  The Modern Marvel has fairly good length, but the core will turn over sooner than the Victory Road so it will makes it's overall move a bit earlier than the Victory Road Solid.  It still has good recovery on the backend as it's a hybrid coverstock.
You can check out each video and reviews here:

Lately I have been having trouble getting the shine off the ball.  I have baked it, and reserfaced it 500/4000, but it is still shinier than my wife's Moder Marvel, that she got a few month's after mine.  Any suggestions?
