Dry lane ball
« on: February 05, 2008, 10:08:34 AM »
Looking for a ball to use on dry lanes.  First ball out of the bag is my Agent.  Throw is straight up the 8 board and watch it track to the pocket.  Great ball!!  I have an Infinite One for heavier conditions but don't get to use it much.  Lately we've had a drier lane condition that has forced me deeper on the lanes.  I've had some success moving deeper but feel more comfortable with the straighter line.  Please help me choose a ball that I don't have to throw extremely hard on drier conditions.

Well, you could take a look at the roto grip neptune, this ball is really smooth from what I have heard, you could also look at a roto grip mercury, this ball is smooth as well. Also are you looking just one company or, does it matter?

The only thing is that with a tropical storm, it still has a pretty strong cover on it, and might grip too much for drier conditions playing straight up the boards. Unless you drill it pretty weak and polish it up more, then it might work.

I had success with most of the Storm products I've bought so I am partial to them but am open to others.

Ok, I would suggest a jolt solid, would be really smooth, especially with your higher ball speed, but you could also take a look at the new roto grip pluto, same as the neptune but with a solid cover. But the jolt solid sounds like a good ball for what your looking for.

Also have you talked to your ball driller about what your looking for?

River

He's a Brunswick guy.  Recommended a BVP Rampage.

Jolt Pearl is probably your best bet.  Jolt solid is ok also, but it's a solid cover, therefore will grip the lane more than a pearl & hook a little sooner.  Storm Ice would be a good spare ball.  I've heard some people say the Tropical does tend to hook more on light to dry so it all depends on what you're trying to do.  Go straight up the boards or try to play hook.  Owned by Storm is Roto-Grip, Planet series are good suggestions also.  Mercury is a discontinued ball I believe, so Neptune or Venus is probably the next bets.  I am not sure which one is more for lighter than the other.  Hope that helps.

On edit, check out the latest review of the Jolt Pearl by Big Mike.  He posted an excellent review of his intentions for what he got the ball for.
Jeff Carter did & excellent review of the Jolt Solid.
Can't go wrong w/either in my opinion.

not much of a step down from an Agent, unless he drills it extremely weak and/or changes the cover a lot.

The Pluto is a good ball, but I think it might be too much if you want to play it straight.  The Tropical hooks more than advertised, so buyer beware  Still a great ball though, great price too.

The Rampage is way too strong, my driller talked me into it. I sold it and bought a Jolt Pearl, and have been very pleased with it.

I have a Jolt Pearl for the exact condition you are facing.  It works pretty well, but does need dry boards.

I had just got a tropical storm for dry conditions.  Last night during a second shift league, after using my cherry vibe and struggling to a 162, I decided it was time to pull out the tropical storm for the third game.  Well, this ball worked great.  It carried all kinds of shots.  I ended up shooting a 255 the last game.  This ball was definitely what I was looking for.
