Cracked
« on: September 26, 2019, 02:28:52 PM »
So I just had my 6th Storm / Roti ball crack.  Before you say it , they are always indoors and rotated once a week at least if not used that week in league.  As much as I love Storm equipment I feel like I am just done replacing these balls.  I think that enough is enough and it’s time to move on to equipment that isn’t as fragile.  Anybody got any suggestions?   I hear Motiv is super durable.

Have yet to have a Motiv ball crack (have half dozen now) and even stored my Recoil in garage during hot part of summer (over 115 here, GB3 x-out couldn't take the heat nor a Brunswick Avalanche Pearl (turd ball anyway)).  I feel ya though.  Seeing a Hustle Ink split indoors (always stored indoors, only indoor complete split so far) after 15 months or so (just out of warranty but got lucky and retailer covered it) was the tipping point for me.  Also had a Hy-Road pearl split just after warranty period but was in garage, storing all Storm/Roto stuff now in bags in house praying.

(edit:  TL;DR - Storm makes great stuff but they do charge a premium and not fun to have to baby it and hope it doesn't crack just outside of warranty which is already fairly short.  But as said below maybe just bad luck as my sample size isn't huge, 2 out of 6 balls or so).

Must be bad luck. Store 10 storm/RG balls in roller and vise tourney bags in my garage year-round in Ohio. Haven’t had one crack yet.

I bowl mostly with Motiv and buy almost every new ball they release.

Take it from me, Motiv stuff cracks just like other brands. In addition,  Motiv balls occasionally still have a separation issue with their logos.

Having said that, I still prefer my Motiv balls...

I have fourteen Motiv balls from 2012 to date.  Only had a Chronic Paranoia crack.  Years ago when the Graffiti Tag was introduced it was known to crack (at least the original batches).  My opinion is Motiv balls crack far far less than Storm/Roto and 900 Global (both pre and post Storm).
P.S. Just lost my Roto Idol (cracked all the way around the ball) two weeks ago at 11 months. Being replaced under the warranty.

I have used mostly Storm/Roto over the last 15 years and have never had one crack, I store them in my basement (Wisconsin) in bags, boxes, concrete floors, on a table, wherever they end up.

One thing though, I almost never buy a new ball when it's first released, I wait to see people use them and then decide if I want it or not.  Maybe first runs of balls are more likely to crack?

Seems like it's different for everyone.  Maybe it's climate or part of the country?  I have no idea, none of my stuff cracks.  I've had two crack in 5 years, and one I made it crack because I hated it . . and the other was an old one that I just let sit on a wood rack in the basement forever, and it had been plugged before and cracked from a plug hole.  Also having been in a pro shop for 15 years . . all brands crack.  I can't really say any one brand cracks more than any other.  Most of the time it's operator error though, and I know it gets harped on enough here that I won't repeat all the factors, but that's the one thing that was consistent.  I haven't seen much from any company that was just an honest defect or an honest crack in the last 15 years.

It will be interesting to see if the Brunswick DOT technology becomes the industry's answer for eliminating most of the cracking issues reported in the user forums.
I believe it has only been out for approximately a year and has a three year warranty on cracking.  Time will tell if Brunswick and their related brands where this technology is available is the answer.  Hope so, as I have lost more balls to cracking in the last 4-5 years than I want to remember.

+1.  Cracking sucks.  I wish everyone had at least 2 year warranties.

Amen to that!
If my cracked bowling balls would have had a two year warranty, I estimate 25-30% of them would have been covered over the ones that were covered under the one year warranty.
My guess is when the base price closes in at the $200 mark ($270 or more, out the door), the manufactures may have to consider giving some extra warranty coverage.  To lay out that kinda cash with only a one year warranty, would be a tough buy for me.
