Title: ok, you storm experts - I have a question
Post by: mumzie on April 29, 2003, 07:22:22 PM
Take a look at my profile for the current arsenal.
I have an opportunity to pick up one of the following balls, and I can't make up my mind...
I kinda need a dry lane ball to replace my orange messenger, since it's plugged, and I'll have to get rid of it. I had almost decided on the Sonic X for this slot. However, my original choice on this deal was a Trauma Recovery, which is no longer available.

Please - those of you who know these balls - help me out - let me know the pros and cons of each of these balls.

My choices are:
Trauma ER
Shock Trauma
Eraser Boost
Eraser Blaze
Too Hot
Hot Rod

Thanks in advance!!!

Mumzie, I apologize but the only light or drier condition ball on the list is a Too Hot........your list includes a bunch of varieties....

If you "kinda need a dry lane ball" than I would stick to either the Too Hot or maybe he Blaze.  The blaze will give you a little more potential hook over the too hook due to the core and light load particle coverstock.  However it can also blend out severe wet/dry transitions on the lane.  I loved both of my Too Hots and given the choice for a dry lane ball I would pick that ball.

Why would are you considering any of the other balls if you want a dry lane ball?  Or are you looking for something else?  The list that you provided could basically an arsenal for some people.

Well, let me rephrase this -
If you had a choice of any of the balls on the list,
and you already owned an X factor and a Deuce, which ball would you get???

The dry lane ball was an aside - I don't really want to "squander" this opportunity on that condition...

O.K. your post makes more sense now.

Out of your list I would probably go with ER.  I based this souly on:

1. I don't get along with particle equipement, even storms.
2. The Hot Rod, while a good ball seemed a bit under/over.  The ball hooked a lot more than most thought it would, but it has a great midlane read/move to it.
3. Since the Duece shares the Shock Trauma's coverstock I can see it overlapping too much with your Duece.
4. Too Hot is a great ball...but you seem to want the most bang for your buck.

I would go after the ER and play around with the surface.  I drilled enough ER's to realize the underlying potential of the ball given the correct surface prep / match up.

I'm having big trouble with my too hot (pin over fingers, cg in palm).  It's not stong enough for a heavy house shot on syth. lanes and it takes off like a bat out of hell on a heavy house shot on wooden lanes with clean backends (I just described both of my leages).  Even with a coat or two of Control It it's still is too strong for anything with clean backends and light oils.  Maybe it's my medium to slow speed or my 45 degress of axis rotation that causes this problem.  Either way, for flying backends I'm thinking of looking in the direction of a Beast, Track Magic, or, or,... I don't know.

As you may or may not know, the Too Hot, Tour Power, Erase It and the entire Trauma line are on the chopping block. Storm has put all of their eggs in the X Factor and Eraser baskets.

I have thrown all the balls that you list and I would say that if you have slower ball speed, look into a Hot Rod or a Too Hot. I have a Hot Rod drilled pin over ring, cg stacked under. It comes out to be about 5 x 4-1/2 for me. This ball is clean theru the heads, will roll smooth in the midlane, read it late and then have a snap arc on the backend. A drill like this one and an up the back release will give you all kinds of length and a backend that is controllable but powerful.  IF you get around the ball hard and send it wide, it will get back and not jump too hard leaving stuff like 4-9's.

I am in the process of getting the new Pearl Charge to shake down. It may also be a ball to consider.

Good luck. Keep us informed.

Mumzie, have you made a decision yet? Like most on this thread if you want something stronger you might consider the ER. or maybe the Boost or Shock, but it would be more of a niche ball may be too much overlap with both your current balls. If the lanes you most often bowl on are bit too dry for your X, then consider the Blaze, if you want to stay with particle or the Hot Rod for resin.  The  Too Hot if you want to get a little less overlap between your X and next ball.

I found with my style (stroker)the Hot Rod about equal to my Blaze. I have a weak drilling for it to go long while the Hot Rod had a medium drilling. The friend that owns one, has a spinner style and was using it as I was using my X on the same set of lane conditions. All 3 balls make good med-dry lane balls. Hope this helps, just another opinion.

No, I haven't made a decision.
I'll be using this ball on regional and sport conditions...
I'm leaning towards the Too Hot, but the Hot Rod might also be a good ball.
Has anyone used either of these on the shorter sport shots?

I am not much of a Storm Type......but one ball would highly recommend though it has been around a while.....

ThunderFlash....

I know that isn't on your list.....not sure if it is available to you....but have had one for 4 years now and plan on using it until it is the size of a marble....keep it polished and when the lanes go burn city it comes out and carries me on.......

thanks, folks.
The choices I have are:
Trauma ER
Shock Trauma
Eraser Boost
Eraser Blaze
Too Hot
Hot Rod

I know storm (and other vendors) make other good balls that aren't on this list, but this list is what I have to go with.
Seems to me it's now down to Too Hot or Hot Rod.
So - the question is - which will be more predictable on a short oil sport shot where I'll have to probably play a VERY tight inside shot - something like 19-15...???
Seems to me the Hot Rod might not be predictable enough. Opinions?

One guy I know has a too hot. But he has as powerful a game as Robert Smith (and NO, I'm not kidding) - so his opinion is not too applicable to me. However, he did say it MIGHT be a good ball for me. He loves his.

Well, I got the too hot. It arrived yesterday. Now what?
I don't know a tremendous amount about pin placement and stuff, but this one has a 0-1" pin. Any recommended drilling?
I was looking for a dry lane ball... Something to fit just ahead of a 3 piece.

A typical dry lane drilling or a ball of this type is the pin and cg in the gripline.  Unfortunately you got a TH with a short pin...what is the top weight?  Ideally for dry lanes you want a longer pin so that you can put it above your fingers...this produces length.  I would stick to the basic drilling I described and just make sure you keep the finger weight up to promote length.  If you are worried about the ball kicking too hard at the end you can twist the cg slightly to the negative.  This will push the MB into your track area and calm the reaction down.

I never like giving drilling suggestions without seeing someone though.  This suggestion is just a general one.

Thank you. the top weight is 3.06.
I would have preferred a longer pin as well, but I guess I can't complain about it for free...

A lot of people like a short pin for a dry lane ball.  A long pin with the pin placed over the fingers will give more length, but also a lot more snap that will be hard to control on dry lanes.  A great dry lane ball for me is the Blue Hot Flame.  It's sort of between a 2 piece and a 3 piece.  Most of them are short pins because the weight block resembles a pancake.  I put the pin below the ring finger with the CG stacked below.  Because the drilling will be mellow, you can shine the cover a lot if necessary and not have to worry about a huge backend snap.

True enough Strider!  Some people to prefer short pins.  It really all depends on the person, their style and what line / angle they are trying to create.  I personally prefer long pins due to my hand release, etc.  But that's me!

Thanks to all of you.
I got my Too Hot drilled up last week. The pin is about 1/2", and under the palm. The ball is GREAT on toasty lanes. I had lots of chances to use it this last weekend. EXACTLY what I wanted. Thanks to all of you for the great advice.
