New to storm
« on: May 22, 2013, 01:17:55 PM »
So I'm new to storm equipment. I've been throwing stuff from Hopkinsville KY for about the last 5 years.

Here's what my arsenal is looking like right now:

IQ tour solid - drilled 5 1/2 x 3 pin above middle finger

IQ tour pearl - drilled 5x3 pin over ring finger

Hyroad - drilled 4 1/2 x 2 pin over ring

I obviously have some holes to fill on the drier side of the spectrum,  and the real soupy stuff .

I'm looking for suggestions on what to look at from people with more storm/Roto experience.

Thanx in advance

Well for the soup, check out the Defiant, should be able to round one up fairly cheap online and its great for heavier volumes.

Also, as for a pearl, look at Storm's Lucid. It's a great ball, I have drilled several for different styles of bowlers and they all loved it.

And just for future reference, it would be very helpful if you could post some general info on your game! And it would help in narrowing down what balls might or might not be a good match for you.

Thanks for the reply

My stats are in my profile but ill post them:

Stats: style - cranker (similar to Jason couch)
          Hand - Left
          Rev Rate - 450-475
          Average speed 17.5-18 mph
          Pap  4 1/2 over x 5/8 up
Axis tilt - about 30 deg.

I am looking at the defiant. Buddies has them at 99 bucks today.  I was also thinking the sync or defiant soul. The disturbed intrigues me as well but I'm thinking the disturbed could go between the hyroad and IQ's.

Great, as for the dry any Roto/Storm arsenal that doesn't have a Wrecker in it is a dis-service!! I think you could fit it under your Hy Road with the proper layout.

Also could look at the Lights Out under your Hy Road as well...

I see a ton of wreckers at any regional I go to so I'm with ya there.

Ill be honest the reason I'm switching from the ebonite companies is because you can visually see how much better the storm Roto stuff rolls than the other companies at the regional level.   Obviously there are some phenomenal bowlers throwing them but you see more and more non staffers throwing storm/Roto than others.

Would you go with a defiant, defiant soul, sync, pin down IQ tour or wait for the marvel-s for the heavy stuff.   Usually I'd say the IQ I have would be fine but I had issues in my last regional where they got tighter and I needed something stronger

I would go with this:

Heavy: Defiant or Sync for your solid,  Lucid or Critical Theory (if you can find one) as the pearl.  Any 2 of these will cover the upper end when you need something to work in the soup.

Medium-Medium Heavy: Defiant Soul or Marvel Pearl to go above the IQ Tour Solid.  The Soul is one hell of a ball as a hybrid and is versatile.  A lot of people like how smooth the Marvel Pearl is as well.  Then below would be the IQ Tour Solid, IQ Tour Pearl, and Hy-Road.

Medium-Light: Frantic or Wrecker.  You absolutely need one of these.  The Frantic has the same hybrid cover as the Hy-Road but uses the N.O.S. Core instead.  Great with energy retention in back and carries well.  The Wrecker is going to be a little more angular in back.  The Neutron Core is also great with energy retention and also does a great job with carry.  You won't go wrong either way as you get a lot of ball for the price.

Then if you need a solid or pearl, the Shatter and soon to be released Rumble will fill the lower end nicely.

The Defiant is a very nice ball for the soup.  I've had one for over a year now and it rolls great, provides a predictable arc motion and does a very nice job with carry.  For the price, you're really not going to lose much from the Sync, except maybe 1-3 boards at best.  (The Sync is stronger than both the VG Nano and Defiant).  And both of those balls are really strong to begin with.

I honestly recommend the frantic over the wrecker. The wrecker was over and under. The frantic is my go to piece. And i have a high rev rate so the cover on the wrecker wasn't strong enough on the medium oil. On medium light it's too strong. You're going to need a smooth layout for this ball to work well for you. I wasn't terrible but if you drill it strong it has ittle versatility.

Thanks for the replies:    2handed, I'm kind of liking the idea of a pin down frantic.

Tommyboy74,  the marvel pearl is a ball that I was keeping on the back burner as a ball to drill to fill a gap when I'm done with building my arsenal.   I really really like the looks of the defiant soul.  The defiant soul will probably end up in my bag sooner than later.

Where would the disturbed come into play?  This is another quite popular ball that is in everybody's bag but my though is I'd get some overlap between it and the soul

It's a medium-heavy ball.  I would slot it above the IQ balls/Hy-Road but below other balls you may add such as the Defiant Soul or Marvel Pearl.

The Frantic hasn't done me wrong.  Mine is pin up since I wanted mine to be more of a skid/snap to better match my higher ball speed/rev rate (I'm a little speed dominant).  Even with this, the motion is very consistent and it's very effective.  In your case, I like the pin down idea to keep it a bit smoother.
