Watching the show Sunday, and noticed that Larsen had both and Optimus and Marvel Pearl in his arsenal ( he was throwing the Optimus ). What surprised me is that they were showing the Marvel Pearl as a 10 and the Optimus as a 9.5. I have a Marvel Pearl that has become a go to tourney ball ( thank you Tim Mack ), and it is indeed a strong heavy rolling pearl. However, my understanding was that as a replacement for the MP, the Optimus was supposed to be a stronger shell with the same core.

Thats what I thought too, not only is the Marvel Pearl stronger, to me, its just a better ball.

The Marvel Pearl and Optimus have the same cover (R2X Pearl) with different cores.

The marvel pearl just has a better roll. The optimus has that 'new' feeling to it, but its a shame that the marvel pearl is moving on.
I would definitely want to try a optimus solid!

I haven't heard many good reports about the Optimus either. Core shell matchup is such an important, but elusive thing.

The Optimus Solid is what I'm waiting for

Idk its about 50/50 back home. Most tried and thought it would be some big skid flip ball, those you drilled it for skid flip were dissatisfied. Those who drilled it to roll, they rewllyblike theirs.

Yeah, it's a really rolly core with a snappy cover. Heavier hands will like it better because it still picks up in the mids, but gets good push and then finishes strong. If you fling it down there expecting it to hit friction and turn sideways, you're probably going to be disappointed because that just wasn't the intent.

Completely agree!

I thought the hook rating presented on the show was based on the surface adjustment made and the layouts

How does the Optimus compare to the primal rage?
-
Optimus has a slightly later rolling core than the pearl. The pearl has been an awesome tournament piece in a lot bags for years. The Optimus is not as versatile out of box like the pearl. From those that I drilled, we slapped a 4000 pad on the ball out of the box before we put holes in it and the ball was PHENOMENAL! I think they over polish it from the factory. But it isnt quite the pearl.
The Primal Rage will be earlier and heavier than the Optimus. Actually, my opinion is the rage will be earlier than both. Rage is an awesome ball and between that and the Marvel Pearl, I think you'd be splitting hairs.

That would be a little hard to keep track of, but being that Larsen's Optimus did have surface on it, that would make sense.
