Over/under on the Anarchy?
« on: June 21, 2011, 07:29:12 AM »
My Anarchy has about 20 games on it currently and at first, it was a great ball.  However, it was a little too touchy for the lane conditions I was bowling on.  Therefore, I made a surface adjustment to 2000 grit and polish.  However, when I decided that 2000 grit was worse, I brought it back to factory finish which is 1500/polished.  Now, I see that the ball is skidding way too much and was not able to use it this past Sunday (my Rising Star was outhooking the Anarchy.)

Now, I do keep up on the maintenance with the ball, cleaning it after being used, and have used Powerhouse Gel on it once to do a deep clean.   I don't think that it would have soaked up that much oil to need a baking at the pro shop.  Also, the drilling on the ball is nearly identical to the VG Nano I have, except it doesn't have the hole at P1.   Is it possible that the ball may have too much polish after 2 surface changes?  If so, what is the best and safest way to remove it?

My arsenal

Medium-Heavy Oil: Storm Anarchy: 1500 polished
Medium Oil: Roto Grip Nomad Dagger: 1500 polished

Medium-Light Oil: Roto Grip Rising Star: 1500 polished

The only way to remove polish is by sanding.

How did you achieve the 1500 polished finish?

I ended up using 500 Siaair on all sides of the ball, then went to a 1500 Siaair pad on all sides of the ball.  Originally wanted Abralon but the pro shop had this instead.  Once this was done, I then used Storm Step 2 polish, following the directions on lightly applying it to the surface and working it into the cover.  All of this was done while having the ball in my spinner.

Skip the 1500 Siaair pad and go straight to Storm Step 2. The Step 2 will bring it to a 1500 grit finish similar to the factory.

If you want the "near" factory finish, start with a 360 grit pad on 4 sides for maybe 30 seconds a side, then 500 grit for 10 secs a side, then Storm Step 2. No further polish after the Step 2. You should be able to see some of the sanding lines from the 360 grit pad.

I suspect when you used the 1500 Siaair pad, then the Storm Step 2 you removed everything from the 500 grit pad. The ball needs those deep peaks and valleys from the lower grit to handle the oil.

Hope this helps.

One other question- would 500 Siaair/Storm Xtra Shine be equivalent to using 500/Storm Step 2?

I think 500 Siaair would be the same as 500 Abralon, but Storm Xtra Shine isn't the same as Storm Step 2.

before sanding your bowling ball again.. 1st try taking the 1K or 1500 pad and hand turning on all sides to put some lines back on it(just to dull it up a little)..  you just might find that it comes back to life..  it sounds like you just burned to much polish onto the ball.. if that does not work you can always do what was suggested earlier.. slashrr69

I agree with slasher69, you should try a light touch up with the 1500 before you take another layer off your ball.

The info I gave you was to get it back somewhat like the factory finish.

To get it back to 1500 grit polish one would need to use the grey scotchbrite pad after the 500 abralon pad, and then hit it with storm finish 2.  It's that stuff that looks like salad dressing but it's only tasty for a bowling ball cover. :)  I've used storm finish 2 on some strong balls after taking the cover to 1k and it helps get the ball through the heads while retaining the strong backend associated with the particular ball(s)

tommyboy,

milo and the crew are steering you straight.

FYI you could have used the 500 grit Siaair/Abralon and the 1500 grit Siaair/Abralon IF you followed it with a non-abrasive polish.

Storm's Step 2 is a compound or abrasive polish. It has grit in it which takes the 1500 grit level and makes it finer and finer as well as adding a level of polish. So it might have wound up being something like 2500 or 3000 grit plus polish. So small wonder it skidded too much.

Xtra Shine would work but I'm not sure what grit level would be the appropriate base inorder to wind up with "1500 grit polished". It might be 1000 grit, but I couldn't say for sure. Xtra Shine is an abrasive polish (theoretically it maxes out at 3500 grit)  but it is not as abrasive as Step 2.

I had the exact same thing just happen to my VE and Anarchy.  I just got a spinner last week.  Went 360, 500, then Powerhouse Factory Finish.  Went yesterday to practice to make sure I didn't kill the balls.  They had a good turn midlane but then seemed to skid into the pins.  I don't have the Storm Step 2, but would putting them on the spinner, then hitting them with a light 4000 pad help brake up the polish a bit?

Balls in the bag and order they come out:
#1/2 Nano and Anarchy #3- Virtual Energy   #4- Gravity Shift #5- Big Hit (spare and really dry)
#6- Teal Rhino Pro (oldie but a goodie)

Storm22,

I used Ebonites Powerhouse Factory Finish on a spinner and I'm guessing it was too much polish.  So I lightly went over the ball with a 2000 Ablaron pad with water by hand across the track and then cleaned the ball with Knock Out.  Its amazing how much better the ball performed.
