Passion and heavy oil
« on: March 19, 2007, 12:44:27 AM »
Does anyone have a Passion they use on heavy oil patterns?  I'm joining a PBA pattern sport league this summer and need a heavy oil ball.  It's a toss up between this ball or the MoRich Awesome Hook so I'm curious how the Passion worked for everyone else.  Feedback appreciated!

As much as I like Storm, I will say I heard nothing but bad things about the Passion.  I recommend staying away from it and getting a heavy oil ball elsewhere.

The key is make sure you are using it on heavy oil.  I know someone who has one and they actually had to bring the surface up to get more use out of it.

I opted to go with the symmetrical Special Agent core and a dull surface instead, but I don't think I bowl on really heavy oil either.

I have seen some people were going with the Double Agent for heavy oil.  That may be worth checking out also.

I have seen so much success with the Paradigms and love the domination, so for heavy oil with the Passion it is very appealing.  But, just as you said Necromancer, I haven't heard many good reviews on it.  It makes me wonder if the people who bought it are using it on a THS.  This ball is obviously not for THS and I would be using mine strictly for the heavy patters in the PBA league.

I'm leaning towards the Aweseome Hook but I REALLY want that Passion any positive feedback from anyone?

From what I've seen, the Passion is a fine ball, you just have to know how and when to use it.

In box finish, you'll need some pretty good juice to keep the ball from burning up. If you have enough oil, the ball will read nicely and make a smooth, powerful arc to the hole and provide very solid carry.

If you want to use it more or get more backend out of it, brining the surface up and maybe adding a bit of shine would be the way to go. When I've seen people throw it, this is usually what I've seen.

So, I definitely don't think the Passion is a bad ball; you just have to know how to match up with it.

Still, I would probably go with the Awesome Hook or even the Total Shock & Awe if you want a true oiler. I've owned both, and the Total was definitely the better heavy-oil reactive of the two. The box surface gets that ball rolling very, very early. The AH is also quite aggressive, but it wants to push down a bit further, which I did not care for on heavier patterns.

If you want something for truly heavy, the Passion might work, but I think the Total Shock & Awe will work better.

I have a Passion and have used it on a heavier shot a few times...works beautifully. So consistent and smooth...and probably the best carry out of any ball I've owned. On a THS the ball can be a bit squirty once the lanes start to break down. My house USUALLY puts out a pretty good THS for league and maybe 1 in 4 weeks are the lanes too dry for it. But when the lanes dry up be ready to switch balls, this thing burns up so fast. It can also handle carry down no problem. My only complaint with it is that it sucks up oil quicker than a vacuum, so be prepared to keep on top of maintenance. Overall I love this ball, it's pretty versatile for me and hits/carries quite quite well. After about 140+ games it still hits and carries just as hard as game 1. And there's nothing even resembling a track yet, which is cool. Hope this helps!

what is the line that you play with the passion?

I'm 6'4 so the line I through doesn't really make sense to people when I tell them I'm a power stroker/low end tweener but I swear it's where I play and my height/arm swing make it more like an outside line.

The 3 lines I usually end up using are :
28 over 10 breakpoint of about 5
30 over 12 breakpoint of about 8
34 over 15 breakpoint of about 10

my speed is about 14 - 14.5 mph with medium revs.

I'm thowing a no mercy right now that works like a beast on those lines but in oil it tends to slide out on me.

I have no problem moving to a line like 15 over 5 or anything outside like that which is why I'm leaning towards storm.  If I can get a heavy oil pattern with a skid flip ball that allows me to move to the outside and run up and in, but also allow me to move inside with no sliding then I'm sold on it.  So my question is which would fit, passion or awesome hook?  I have a S&D and the vanguard core is almost impossible to keep outside, it checks up so early for me so I'm worried about getting an awesome hook and having to play way deep, I don't think I have enough hand for that ball.

I loved my S&D and it helped me learn a deep inside line, so I guess I may be able to handle AH, but I wonder which would be more versatile and fit my game in heavy oil.

My feet are at 28, my target is 2nd arrow, maybe I didn't explain it right?  Can you elaborate?

I have both with similar drillings.  For me the AH handles heavy oil much better than the Passion.  I do like the Passion but not on heavy oil.

You might also consider getting a Roto Grip Epic Battle if you don't trust the Passion. Great bowling ball.

I think it is convention to give the line of the ball, because telling us where your feet are doesn't nail down the line of the ball.

Most people lay down 7-8 boards inside of the inside of their foot.  This still makes your line 20->10, so at 30ft you are still in the dill (10 boards crossed in first 15ft => 10 boards crossed in the next 15ft).

Perhaps you start with your foot at 28??  Doesn't really matter where you start if you dont tell us where you finish though

edit:
Since you gave a BP, I'm gonna guess that the ball actually starts at about 12/13, and your foot is on 20.  This means you have about a 3board drift to the right(righty).  Am I anywhere near close?

I usually throw my Passion, on this drier-ish house I'm at now, by putting the ball down at about 17 or so, hits 12 at the arrows and breaks out around the 7/8 board. Depending on volume of oil it's usually a variation of that. But if the oil is short or light, forget it, this ball goes back in the bag.

Go with a Storm Agent. Many pro players were throwing that last week on the VIPER pattern.

I think the only way the Passion matches up well is on heavier oil.  On a THS, the Passion won't really do for you what you want it to do.  The only time I play with it on a THS is with heavier carrydown or if I play the deep inside line.  I used it in a PBA league last summer and it matched up pretty well.  The earlier roll will give you a more consistent, more even reaction on the backend.  I have one and my buddy has one and between us there has been 4 300's and 3 800's so I definitely think it's an amazing ball.  If you opt for something different than the Passion, go for the Double Agent.
