Phaze 5 Review
« on: October 07, 2022, 10:54:31 AM »
Layout - 5 x 30
Surface - Reacta Gloss

The Phaze 5 is the replacement for the USBC discontinued Phaze 4.  The Core and Cover combination are the same, but the new Reacta Gloss finish creates a slightly different reaction for the Phaze 5.  The Reacta Gloss offers the same clean through the front and strong midlane roll that we expect from the Velocity Core but gives a more rounded and more continuous shape than the Phaze 4.  The Phaze 4 gave a more angular backend reaction when compared.  I find for my game, that the more rounded backend shape a ball has, the more use it allows for me especially as the lanes become more wet/dry.  This is a more ideal shape for most bowlers in today's environments.

My league pattern is around 44 feet in length with medium volume.  I tend to use stronger asymmetrical cores to start and then ball down to more angular symmetrical cores.  The Phaze 5 for me is a great step down from the new Super Nova.  The Phaze 5 provides more length in the front and more angle down lane while keeping me in the same zone with my feet.  Those who use a Phaze 2 will also see similar results.  The new Reacta Gloss finish should bode well with most league conditions and bowling styles as it reads well in the oil and is slightly smoother off the dry boards compared to the Phaze 4.  Those who bowl on more oil can take the Reacta Gloss off to see a stronger and smoother overall motion.

Storm Phaze V
Layout and surface information: 5.5 x 4.5 x 3 out of box with Reacta Gloss - but adjusted to 4K Fast.

My intention for this Phaze V was to add it to my new 6 ball tournament arsenal line for mid to heavy length and volume condition tournaments where I know the surface tends to be a little tougher to deal with, or just know that piece I can lean on when needed like most higher level bowlers that use Phaze IIs, iQ Tours, or Hy Road lines. I use more hybrid pearlized and pearlized covers over solid coverstocks. I found that the surface adjustment fitted better to my game of higher revs, and mid to low ball speeds. Using it out of the box the Phaze V floated on the fronts and mids of the lane and did not quite come off the pattern like my “eyes” like to see. I need a little earlier motion for my comfort zone. If the balls take too long to develop in the back end, I tend to try to force it straighter or do something that I know won’t work well, but it is human nature to try to “control” things. The Phaze V ball did recover a ton when I opened up the angles to feed the ball farther down the lane and make the breakpoint closer to the backend but without duck hooking and hitting behind the 1-2 pocket. It 100 PERCENT shreds the pins once it gets there. I really, really love my Phaze V at 4K fast finish.
