Title: Pitch Black vs Burgundy Hammer
Post by: BeerLeague on September 11, 2014, 01:10:22 PM
As a recent Storm convert, I wonder how these 2 balls compare.
I own a mint Burgundy Hammer that I need to add an IT thumb to use it.

Is it a comparable ball?  I am bowling on challenge conditions exclusively and am currently on a shorty in my league.  I observed a national Storm staffer this week whack this pattern with a Pitch Black and it's got me thinking.

While the Black is classified as a urethane, it is not quite what they were putting in them during the burgundy hammer era.  Also I think the cores are a bit stronger today.  I know the blue hammer remake has a much different core than the original from the late 80's.

How do these balls compare.  The Storm Pitch Black OOB @1000 to the new Hammer Burgundy OOB @500 same layout?  If both @1000 I would think slightly closer how do the covers compare stronger/weaker?   Hammer Burgundy React-a-Thane to Pitch Black Control Solid Urethane.   Modified Vibe core to Capacitor core? Any ideas of anyone that have rolled both with same layout?

I have the original Burgundy Hammer and the Pitch Black.  What is the differnce?  Not much.  Hammer hit with burgundy scotch pad rolls and reacts identically to pitch black at box surface.

The black has a slightly softer cover so it has the potential to pick up a roll earlier.  Pht it this way.....you don't need both

The new Burgundy Hammer is really a resin ball with surface prep the allows it to have more of a smooth look like a urethane.

Yeah Bob I rolled one at a demo day.  Slow response cover/resin I would call it with lots of surface.  Has to be 7-8 boards stronger than Hammer's Blue urethane.  Nice ball though and I'd call it a true medium ball OOB.  The Burgundy and Viral are two great balls on the light-medium to medium end right now at a good price point.
