Arsenal Choices
« on: February 08, 2007, 02:01:51 AM »
In my continuing quest to re-complete my simple arsenal, I am still confused about this spot.

Which ball do you think would be more important to have?  The Thunderstruck Pearl or the Pyro?  And why?

I currently use:
Special Agent
Thunderstuck Solid
EMPTY SLOT
Ebonite 300 Blue Dot (Single Teardrop Edition)

I am pretty set on getting a Thunderstruck Pearl and drilling it for length but I am wondering if the Pyro would be useful on crappy carrydown situations.  I am only going with a three ball arsenal so I kind of have to choose one or the other here...

There is also the Spit Fire which I really like but I don't think that would be good for what I need.

I really want a ball that I can play down and in with but will get down the lane and still make something happen.  I bowl at three different places and they are all pretty different from each other on any given day.

From what you describe, I'd take a look at the Jolt solid or Pearl. They have not the strongest core, but the Accu-Tread cover on both yields a smooth an earlier reaction than Reactor coverstocks. A little "old school".

I tried the Jolt Pearl and definitely did not like it.  I went ahead and sold that to a friend who was luckily looking for any bowling ball in a 15 pound weight.

The Spit Fire will be too close to the T-Struck solid, I've thrown both and there's not much difference to me except that the T-Struck reads it a little sooner. You could try the solid Jolt if the Pearl was too over/under for what you wanted it to do.  If you're not opposed to Roto Grip (which is usually better for down and in) you could try a Venus or the new Neptune that's coming out next month.  Otherwise, it's the Tropical Storm a higher grit surface and if it's too over/under, no polish.

Hehe... yeah I know that the Spit Fire isn't going to be an option, I just like it.  I am definitely not opposed to Roto Grip because they make good stuff.  I saw the RSX and wanted to try it actually but I guess I sort of ended up with the stuff I have.  I'll definitely look into the Venus and Neptune like you said.

Weird.  I am looking at the 2007 US Bowler Magazine and it shows the Spit Fire getting more Length than the Thunderstruck Pearl.

The Venus looks like an option, but I don't see the Neptune in here...

I think everyone needs to have a Thunderstruck Pearl in there bag, it's one of the better balls i've ever owned.

Ok so I am still pretty confused.  Picking balls is hard.  Well picking "different" balls for the lineup is hard.

I still am not sure if I need to be looking for a midrange pearl or something like a pearl particle.

Mr. Bunnie,

I thought you used to use a Tropical Storm...

As you may have gotten from these responses the answer to your question really depends on what you want this ball for.

If you are looking for -

more angle I'd look at a Fired Up.  It is still the most angular ball from Storm in the midrange class.  It is probably comparable to your Thunderstruck
Solid as far as oil volume is concerned (both are really medium oil balls) but a Fired Up will give you a completely different look as it will go longer before it makes it's turn.  The angle will be much sharper than the Thunderstruck.

a lighter oil ball go with a Jolt Pearl or a Tropical (hence my earlier question).

Keep in mind it is not only the ball but the layout that can help you with different looks.  I have recently started to appreciate a 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 layout with a lower pin placement for drier lanes.  Drill either of these balls that way and you should get a smooth continuous look in lighter oil.  I fall victim to the 'what ball for what condition' trap as well and I would urge you to consider adding layout changes to the mix in order to get what you want out of the ball as well.

Correct, but I went up in weight and now my Tropical and Dark Thunder have gone to another teammate...  This saddens me...
