Title: R2S Hybrid currant ball color
Post by: ocbowler on May 15, 2013, 06:43:52 PM
I've been wanting to get a ball with my favorite coverstock but what's been putting me off was the "limited" color choices that they offer: either super loud( Frantic) or 3 shades of dark blue( including the new Light Out). Why'd they keep making them blue?

Not to be a jerk, but i must say i havent met a person who doesn't like the frantic. Versatile is one word to describe it. Why is color affecting your decision?

I love my Frantic.  Drilling it halfway through this season proved to be a great decision.  It's one of the most versatile balls I've thrown to date and can be used on medium-light all the way up to some longer or flatter medium patterns.  Great ball to say the least.

In fact, I'll go on record by saying that IMO the Frantic is one of the best balls that Storm has ever produced.

I may be speaking out of school here, but I tried the Frantic on Demo day, and was not the least bit impressed.  I did not spend my money on it.  Have seen several people try it in my leagues, but have not seen anyone shoot any big series or games with it.

Agree, I had one and sold it.  It was too over/under, found that it over reacted to the dry and then had too little traction in the oil.  I saw a lot of them when they first came out but not many continued using them after a few weeks.

I too did not find the Frantic useful enough to keep it; so I sold mine. But our single experience does not reflect the number of them used by people who do like it a lot, like they like the IQ TOUR PEARL

I suspect Storm sold a lot of Frantics because they're using the name to market the Fringe replacement, obviously hoping people relate the Frantic name to the Freaking/Freakin' Frantic. It's the same ball as the Fringe, just a new name and a new color.

Same here. My cousin used it for six games and handed it to another guy as he walked out the door.

Same ball on paper, but in actual real life events the FF is a lot stronger than the Fringe. Has to be the color change that has caused what many staffers and myself are seeing when comparing the two.

Remember also that while Storm keeps the same name, R2S, the formula keeps changing slightly over time. Since the Fringe is not very old at all, I'm surprised you or others find the FF so much stronger than the Fringe, PLUS red (in the Fringe) is supposed to be one of the stronger reacting colors. (Like Storm needs a stronger reacting pearl R2S!!)

Charlest,

Look in the FF box and there is data on the spec sheet that says "R2S"- "3rd Gen". So Storm is acknowledging the coverstock formulations.

Do you mean on the box that the FF comes?
Fascinating! I don't think I've ever seen that before. Kudos to Storm.
They should put it on their web page. Thanks.

This info makes me wonder if the HyRoads made today use the same R2S formulation that was used 4 years ago.

Probably not, but I wouldn't expect to see a night and day difference.

This really sucks! I have actually thought about this: there's hardly any way we can tell what kind of changes they make. How would we know what we're getting?

I used to have a Surefire(R2S hybrid) and it was very smooth arching even with pin up( Now the Frantic with a somewhat similar core is flippy and over/under?). The coverstock was also very durable and did not absorb too much oil. Then I got a Tropical Heat( Reacta Hybrid) and it cracked after a few months.

I would like a more distinctive color because I am old and my eyesight is not very good in the "dark" house where I bowl. I am not fast to focus on my mark and if I am also slow to find my ball the others league bowlers will have to keep waiting for me.

So if I have no other choices I'll most likely get the Frantic. I think I can make it more controllable by placing the pin lower. Just hope they haven't changed the formula too much.

Thank you everyone! Very helpful!

I was just kidding anyway. A long joke, but with a serious point. There are many colors in the many variations of R2S: solid, hybrid and pearl. Different cores will make each one slightly different in overall reaction and utility.

Please, don't worry about the formula; the changes are never radical; otherwise they wouldn't still call it "R2S". They made a few changes here and there: one of them was "R2X" and that was significant.

While the Hy-Road, the Lights Out and the CrossRoad all have blue in them somewhere, if you can find an older Reign Supreme, it is also R2S hybrid with a purple and red motif.

It is kind of odd that so many of the R2S Hybrid have mostly blue in them. I like blue personally, but it is odd. A green and silver or a purple and silver might be a nice change of pace.

I drilled the Freakin Frantic the exact same as the Fringe that I am currently using. Top weights, total weight, pin distance, about as close as you can get to be the same. The Freakin was 15lb 3 oz, while the Fringe is 15lb, 2oz. I made sure to drill same depths on the fingers, everything. When I throw these two balls, I have the Fringe as a 4 and 2 move in compared to the Freakin. The Fringe is earlier, and more angular. The Freakin pushes a bit further, and is more "archy".
