Recommendations on a New Ball
« on: July 22, 2003, 08:02:36 PM »
I am currently thinking about getting a new ball for the upcoming fall league. I am averageing 215 in my summer league with a 10 year old purple rhino pro. I have no complaints about the rhino but I think that it is time to upgrade. The oil pattern at my house is dry and long. Any recommendations would be helpful. I am currently leaning towards an X-Factor. Thank you.

Bill

If your shot is a typical pattern, it is probably about 40 feet toal with dry outsides and a pretty big lump in the center.

I have several balls here right now on sale that would work well with a competent driller taking care of business. Most house shots can be attacked in a variety of ways so you can look into a variety of balls and still come out OK. Even the lower lin eballs like the Eraser and HotWire will have SIGNIFICANTLY more reaction than the ball you are throwing.

X Factor Reloaded
Storm Hot Wire
Brunswick Inferno
RotoGrip Pure Fuel
Storm Boost
Storm Eraser
Lane 1 Viper
Columbia Jekyll
Hammer Blade

Drop me an email if you want more info....

I guess what I meant to say jeff was that it is light oil but a long pattern. Is that a better explanation?

Absolutely! thanks.....lighter and longer....See Dougs message....but I'd lean towards the Hot Rod or Hot Wire.

If you want to try Roto Grip.....Sonic X Solid or maybe even the Silver Streak Pearl............Good Luck...

I would opt for the Sonic X solid for this shot.  All the other balls I believe would be too much too early for you.

Chris,

How can you say "too much, too early for you" when he doesn't tell us anything about his style?

According to his profile he is a 30 year old in the Navy that carries a 210 average. But that does not tell us anything about his style. If he is averaging 210 with a Purple Rhino, he knows how to adjust and make his shots. I think he could use any of the balls I mentioned with the proper drill pattern and surface prep.

Sorry about not mentioning anything about my style. I am right handed and usually set up right over the middle dot and throw the ball out anywhere from the 5 to 10 board. Ball speed is usually around 17mph. I am decent at adjusting to the shot also. If I need to play down and in then I am consistent at that I also can pull out my piranha, but I found that ball to be very inconsistent.

Hinestly Bill I thin kanything I listed for you would be a decent choice.

Drill pattern will be more important on the ReLoaded or Pure Fuel than the others but it is hard to go against the Eraser as an all around ball and the Jekyll fits into the same mold.

Hot Wires just arrived today...I am leaving shortly to go get the specs.

Lemme know!!!!

Doug...  I never said the choices you made wouldn't work...I am just going off the information that he provided, his old ball.  Like Robert said; going from a purple rhino pro to some of the equipment you listed is a pretty big jump depending on the exact ball.  I just thought the with what I have seen with the Sonic X Solid thus far that it would push down the lane enough for him and not over react in the backend.  I still feel that if he bowls on a drier shot and is having sucess with the PRP...why would you want to stick him in something that will react to the dry earlier than what he is throwing?  If you look at the list you provided you have to admit that you have a pretty wide range of reactions listed...anything from a Viper up to a Re-Loaded.  If he can combat the current oil pattern with what he has and just wants a new ball...why not stick him in something that will be close to what he already has?  Maybe the Sonic X Solid isn't the best choice...but it's what first came to mind yesterday when I read his post.  From what I remember the PRP had a low diff & RG...there aren't a whole lot of bowling balls out there that will do that now a days.  But I supposed depending on surface prep of the new ball and how his old one is drilled the possibilities do get bigger.  Maybe a Hot Wire would be the answer...or considering the core of the PRP an Ultra Hot would be best?

This is why I don't usually like to make ball recommendations on this board.  It's sometimes tough to recommend equipment when I have a person walk into my shop.  It's by far tougher for anyone to make an exact recommendation over the internet having not seen what exactly a person bowls like, how his old equipment is laid out, etc.

This is my $0.02 for what it is worth...
