Diablo+drill=?
« on: October 30, 2005, 11:00:05 PM »
Hey. Need some drilling suggestions for this gem.
The ball has a four inch pin and three point something top.
The house pattern is slick. Moderately heavy heads, tapered oil to 32, buffed to 42 or somewhere near there. Back-ends are stripped daily.
The bowler is a LOW rev, high track, high speed chucker. With the long oil and her high speed and low revs, she almost shoots straight at the pocket. Carry is NFG and the margin for error is almost zero. How can we make this ball turn all by itself? lol. I do think we can get her to slow down a bit and even change her line to catch more dry boards BEFORE 42 feet. Unfortunately, I dont see her putting any more turn on it than she does now. Soooo....what can we do with the ball? Thanks.

Hmmm, the ball is stelled? The long pin would be rather suited for a late, sharp reaction. I suppose a pin-in ball would have been a better fit.

Well, I'd drill it with the pin under the ring finger, kicked out towards the PAP. This should give an early roll and overall reaction. A really strong pin position at 3 3/8" from PAP could help the ball make a decent turn.
MB could be placed anywhere - at 135° from PAP the ball should deliver an overall smooth curve, at 90° the sharpest backend and at less for a tamed backend. I'd go with the 135°, CG in the palm. If she had some hand on the ball, the 90° could be an option if the lane is fresh. For the less-than-90°, I think the pin-out ball is not the right choice.

Nevertheless, do not expect wonders from the drilling. If the player has too much speed, the drilling (and almost the ball itself) is useless. I have a player in regional league who plays a Swamp Monster at about 20+ mph or more. The ball goes DEAD straight on ANY condition, and the impact is only generated by the speed. Not to mention that he leaves any sort of unholy splits... and spare game is poor, too. He would do the same with a simple polyester, I think.
