Title: Rocket
Post by: 2handedrook12 on February 20, 2015, 01:07:13 PM
What's the scoop on the Rocket? Is it close to any of the past "hybrids"? Hoping it is similar to the Frantic!

I am hoping it is better than the Frantic.  That ball was not good to me.  Over/under nightmare.

Imagine a stronger, bit cleaner Punch Out.  It revs up a bit sooner than the Punch Out, but the shape is very similar, just about 4-5 boards more hook overall.

So how much, if any, is it different from a Hy-Road?  Besides that one is blue and one is orange.

According to one Storm "person" in the above thread I quoted, the Rocket is slightly earlier, reading the lane "slightly" earlier than the Hy-Road. So, I'd assume this is the 49th attempt by Storm to replace the Hy-Road and generate new sales.
(This is the jist I got from that thread; I don't own one and haven't compared it to a HR.)

I'm actually shocked at how different the two are.  The Rocket is 3-5 boards stronger, it revs stronger in the mids, and the reaction shape is very different.  While the Hyroad is very smooth and continuous, the Rocket I think is actually cleaner through the heads, with a quicker, cleaner read off the dry.  I thought I was going to have a ton of overlap there, but I really don't think they're anywhere close.  The difference in shape is what really stands out the most.

To make another comparison, to me it's like the difference between the Revolt and the Revolt Vengeance, or maybe better yet the IQ Tour Fusion and the Tour Solid, those two act nothing alike.

Yeah that's right, cleaner through the heads.  It does however rev stronger in the mids.

If you want a replacement for your Hyroad, don't get a Rocket.  If you want a ridiculously good ball that does exactly what they intended in bridging the gap between the IQ series and the Hyroads, then get a Rocket.  But I can say very definitively that if you get a Rocket expecting a slightly stronger Hyroad, you're going to be in for a surprise.

Thanks.  Just looking for a real world comparison.  I wonder what the comparison would be if they were the same color.  Dark colors always look "smoother".

True.  The difference stands out enough that I think it would still be pretty obvious.

How old is the HyRoad you are using to compare?

The newer version, but it's got some games on it.  I'm putting in an order for a brand new one next week to make a better comparison.

Just from watching Duke throw it on the 47 foot pattern, I would say that the rocket likes end over end roll.

The Rocket responds very good to what you want it to do.  If you want it to get to the spot and stand up, it will do that, it won't keep rolling and continuing.  It does need friction to move though, it's a medium strength cover on a medium strength core, and it doesn't have a ton of traction in oil.  It's a ball that definitely makes it easy to control the breakpoint with a simple physical adjustment.  However, that also means you won't get away with bad misses like you may with some other ball.
