Ball and layout for extremely dry lanes
« on: July 03, 2007, 03:16:15 PM »
The center where I am bowling my summer league is trying to save money I guess, they are only oiling on Sundays.  I need something for litterally no oil.  My specs are: 19 mph, 450 rpms, 30-60 tilt, 5" over 1/2" up PAP.  I threw one shot tonight with my fired up, 5" pin up 4000 abralon polished, from 33 out to 4 and it jumped brooklyn.  Nothing else I had could get down the lane with any energy left.  I ended up throwing plastic all night.  I have recently changed to storm, but am open to any ideas. Thanks

The most comfort you can get is that most everyone else will have trouble scoring as well.  With no oil like that, especially later in the week, plastic will probably be the way to go.  The XXXL is really the only one with a dynamic weight block, everything else will be basically the same (in spite of the "but the Blue Dot is harder" nuts).

Only oiling on sundays, WOW. You must live in the middle of nowhere for them not to be able to afford to oil at least once a day before leagues.

But yea, best thing for no oil is plastic, the Red XXXL will probably be a little strong.

If you don't wanna go plastic or urethane, try a Neptune. I have one drilled 4x4 with the pin down and I have not found a pattern too dry for it, and it would hook even less if it were at 4000 abralon. It should be good OOB, but with a surface change, it should definitely fit your needs...and Storm makes it!!! BONUS!!!

When having trouble, just throw it harder!!!

You need to find out if there is even enough head oil to use a resin ball. Teh Fired UP, even going very deep, is not a very mild ball by anyone's standard's.

You might have to try one of the mildest of balls, such as the Neptune, Tropical Storm, Power Groove Dry/R, Lanemasters Hornet, Visionary Blue/Green Centaur (polished) to see if you can use them. They require much less oil than a Fired-Up, but being resin, they still require some oil.

If one of these fails, then Polyester/plastic will be the only answer.

FYI one of these will clear dry-ish heads much cleaner than the Visionary Slate Blue Gargoyle, a pearl urethane. It is a wonderful ball intended for light oil, but it will not go as long as one of the above resins but will have less backend. It is a control ball, but again, I believe one of the above balls are more useful on lanes that are dry but have enough head oil to permit the use of resun or urethane.
