Title: Setting up new tournament arsenal
Post by: xxZonexx on May 30, 2008, 12:41:31 PM
Im planning on a new arsenal for next year, how much over lap would this be

Dimension
Gravity Shift
Rapid fire
Rapid fire Prl
Spit fire
Street rod Prl
Spare ball

Im a medium track tweener with about 16mph speed and 300 revs. If there is any changes you would make to the list above please let me know. Thanks

Storm
Specail Agent
Domination
Spit Fire (4.5 x 5)

Common question - IMO the right way to set up a tourn. arsenal is to come up with a list of ball reaction characteristics that you will need and then backfill into available balls.  You should look at length, reaction shape, and reaction speed.  A good mix of pearls, solids, pearl particles as well as differing RG / Diff. cores should work.

Initial reaction is you have 2 solids and 4 pearls. Rapid Fire, Spit Fire, and Street Rod Pearl are relatively close.  I would consider dropping the Spit Fire for a Shift.

i agree with greenefam, the Shift is great for a tournament arsenal

i'll 4th the shift.

also, i think you need a ball weaker than the street rod. it's a lot stronger than advertised. i'd say either a jolt solid or pearl.

don't bother with the spitfire

pick up another rapid pearl or street rod pearl

go more solids keep the pearls for the dryer that way you get a much smoother controllable move to the pocket which Imo is much better on a tournament shot

Looks good to me.  Remember all that matters is that it is a good arsenal for you - not for me or any of the other people on this board.  I think you have a good mix.

The topic of a weaker ball for drier conditions was brought up earlier in this thread.  This really depends on what works for you.  The weakest ball I own is my T-Road Pearl (4000 abralon 5x3).  I know that for some people this is NOT weak enough for them on drier shots but I have yet to find a condition that I needed less than this ball.  Really if the Street Rod Pearl works for you on the driest shot you will ever see then you are good.

I will most likely buy a spit fire aswell just because that ball reads so well for me, really like the inverted core gives me a nice midlane read and a controlable reaction, really a great ball.

that would be a pretty good arsenal, except...all storm bowling balls hook the same amount..and they suck

i would just buy 7 good bowling balls?

How about the Attitude Shift and/or the T-Road Solid. I don't own them, but rolled them at an Open House.  Both were very smooth and controllable.  I own the Horizon Solid, which as similar numbers to the T-Road Solid.  The HS is a great benchmark and takes surface adjustments very well.

I find that reaction SHAPE is so helpful for a tournament.  After a bunch of games with a ton of bowlers on the shot, I find myself moving super far left.  Then I get my weaker stuff and I can play the same area without much trouble at all.  A broad spectrum from heavy oil to bare wood helps me a ton.  From what I've seen, you definitely got a wonderful arsenal planned out (your game depending of course), and I wish you the best of luck!

Usually people back up statements with facts if they are going to slam. It is a Storm forum, so why the negativity towards there product? If you are not a Storm fan, thats why there are forums for all of the manufacturers out there.

Zone, I think just a little more info is needed on what you are setting up this arsenal for. If you just bowl on a couple of house shot leagues, then I wouldn't recommend more than 3 and a spare. Anymore for house shots are just going to cause mass confusion. Now if you are setting up a true blue tourney shot arsenal, I think you will find what Greenfam wrote to be the very best way to do it.

I can give one piece of advice, the Street Rod solid is a great place to start. Very smooth, arcy piece. It is low diff, so drill it on the more flaring side of your sweet spot which should be close to 4-4.5". The diff is lower on this ball, so a shorter pin-to-pap will create a bit more flare and might even put this close to a great benchmark reaction to build around.

Tell us more about your arsenal plans and we can throw more feelings out about what a good tournament arsenal should consist of.

Street Rod Pearl is stronger than you think. Personally I have a Tropical above my spare. (Don't check my profile, the ball list is old...have nearly all Storm and a few Rotos now)

Off the subject, I HATE the smell of the Gravity, but LOVE the reaction.

If you are looking for something between the street rod pearl and your spare, a neptune drilled semi strong would fill that gap perfectly, or you could go with a pluto as well, just an idea though.

I agree, a Neptune would fit there well...however a urethane ball would work better (IMHO), preferably a Slate Blue Gargoyle if you can find one.
