Title: Simplicity
Post by: AlonzoHarris on January 12, 2018, 08:37:33 AM
Spark to this thought is how Jesper basically only uses urethane. My favorite ball is the Hy-Road Pearl. If I could just use two of them to cover most conditions that would be bliss. Anyone ever try it with 2k on it?

I REALLY prefer darker/solid(ish) colored equipment and I wonder if I could run with one of the lineups like below and cover THS (of course) but also a majority of sport.

Code Black OOB
Marvel Pearl OOB
IQTS OOB
Hy-Road Pearl 2K (Maybe larger VAL Angle)
Hy-Road Pearl OOB
Hustle Ink OOB

Or

Hy-Road Nano OOB
Hy-Road OG OOB
Hy-Road Pearl OOB
Hustle Ink OOB

I'd think that would handle anything other than a very heavy condition

This is in no way an attack on you my friend but just as an outsider as someone who reads the boards and sees all of your posts, I think you way over analyze your arsenal. You seem to have more second guessing and debating on switching this or that for this ball etc.. rather than just concetrating on the actual bowling. Don't make it harder on yourself than it needs to be.

I do agree with amyers, both look good other than a true heavy oil ball. I like option 2 better.

I have to agree with you. I've went down the rabbit hole of buying this ball or buying that ball out of curiosity of how it'll play for me. I have a decent grasp of what does and doesn't work for my style though through this ball wh*re journey.

You could probably have an arsenal of IQTS, with two different layouts, and a bunch of different surface preps.

Out of the above options, I'd say take #2 and throw Phaze 2 with extra surface on it, and you're golden.

I can’t ride you too hard, I was slutting it up years ago for balls. Eventually you find out after much trial and error and lots of money, they’re more or less the same. The better I’ve gotten the less balls I’ve drilled.

Haha - yeah I think I'm reaching that point about now. I watched Hi-Sp new reviews of the Drive and Son!Q..remarkably similar...

+1.  Collect balls for fun basically but in general short of plastic on the flood or something when you are on your game you are going to throw a good game regardless of which ball you use.  If the ball matches up better maybe you get more miss room but if you need much miss room often probably not going to have a great session anyway.

Simplicity is underrated.

Most league bowlers who bowl in competently run centers can get away with a 2 ball arsenal (not including a spare option):

- an early rolling smooth ball
- a later transitioning ball with more back end

I get wanting more options - we think we're covered better when we have more options.  We also like to throw new equipment - who doesn't?  However, we use having more options as a crutch against making target, release, speed, and other adjustments that are probably more beneficial.

And just for the record, Alonzo I'm not saying this is you - I'm just speaking generally.

Yep 25 balls but come league time its a Green Quantum for the early smooth ball (need stronger pieces due to low revs and high tilt, especially on the fresh), a Hy-Road for the late transition ball with backend and my Ogre urethane for spares.  Pearls are fairly hit or miss with my style but if did add a pearl would be my Honey Badger.  When in doubt its a 2 piece ball for me.  For whatever reason they do help my carry and save me from splits.

On a THS, I only take 1 ball and my spare ball.  I'll alternate them every 2 or 3 weeks when I get bored or if I'm bowling league at a house that 1 ball matches up well for me (summer league) I'll just stick to that.

Don't get me wrong, having the wrong ball on the wrong day has cost me some pins, but having 5 balls to choose from all the time would cost me a lot more than a few.

I also bowl on a modified shot, and I tried at the beginning to take 1 and a spare, but they get squirrely quick.  It's nice to have a smooth solid or a late breaking pearl to alter the reaction.

I, am however, a member of the ball wh*re club as well.  I have a bunch sitting in many places of my home.  It's really just a waste of money at this point, but it's my money to waste :)

Won't lie have majority of arsenal in my closet (in racks and totes, etc) and picking out ball you feel like throwing that day is one of life's little pleasures.  Deciding what gets benched to the garage isn't easy lol.  That said when I need to score simplicity and familiarity are name of the game.

Most guys on these boards have a way bigger arsenal than is necessary, especially for house shots.

I agree but there are some different situations. Our shot can change drastically depending on who you're bowling with and against.

First to admit it but too old to collect Hot Wheels and at least I drill up everything I buy lol.  Throw most of it regularly as well.  Three ball roller is all I take to league though.

Of course it can.  Most people try to change balls to stay in a comfort zone .  it doesn't work.  On a house shot I can take a tame ball like a vibe to play relatively straight out around the oil line, and something strong on the back end when I move in further.

Maybe I get my footwork a little more solid and a Hy-Road will be enough even for the fresh.  Be nice to only use one strike ball for league.

For league, I have basically 3 balls I use. Boost, Mission, and Code Black. Boost is at 2000 for the fresh, Mission has a little surface just in case I need a faster response with teeth, and Code Black to unleash in the late midlane to backend transition. Don't average anything crazy right now since I'm trying to practice for sport tournaments that require more focus on fundamentals and mental game.

And in some houses it does...
Shot my best set of season on Thur, 759, changing balls each game and staying in my comfort zone.

I am a ball whore as well and as someone else said on the board I am too old to collect hot wheels and it's cheaper than collecting cars.... :D

In regards to the OP. Have you concidered other manufacturers.  I know I'm kind of a lonely only on this but I have a AMF nighthawk stealth se that just won't give up the #1 spot in my bag. The ball works on a wide variety of conditions and is the most accurate ball I own. I continue to try to replace it with other balls to no avail.

Hmmm...  ???  Sorta like women and their shoe collections.  ;D If my woman had, would cut back on about 50% less shoes, I could afford more than my 5 ball arsenal.  ::)

Doom. You won't be sorry you did but you'll have to buy another one so you have an extra when you wear out the first.

That ball used to always come up when I would do searches for my Lane 1 Stealth Bomber.  Damn did I buy the wrong stealth ball.  Oh well you live and learn and shed a tear more for Beans polish (glad got big ass bottle) than Lane 1s crappy balls.  That would be the AMF ball I would get for sure.  Have some of their urethane and even rubber from back in the day.
