Confusion on Hyroad
« on: October 28, 2012, 11:45:52 PM »
Im baffled. I ordered an ebay Hyroad for 53bucks. said it had 10games. The pin is just above the ring finger, and it has a very small weight hole. I never got around to measuring it though. This ball flat out hoooooks. More then any ball ive ever owned. which sounds weird considering its not an insanely strong ball. It outhooks my vivid by 5-6boards on fresh oil. I bowled on the usbc white pattern, and the kegel middle road. On both shots the hyroad 4000grit polished outhooked my vivid and anarchy by atleast 6boards. When it was in the oil it would still outhook them, and when it hit a bit of friction it reeeaaally took off. The anarchy and vivid are both drilled 4x4x2. Vivid has a balance hole, anarchy does not. The vivid was very well maintained, less then 50games, and i recently gave it a bath to clean the oil out, and touched it up with 2000grit. The drilling can't make that huge of a difference can it? Maybe the vivid just hasnt been in enough oil to shine?

I think its a lil bit of everything you were saying..and the hyroad is like the perfect ball...its going to be pretty decent on almost every shot..my crossroad is usually always too much off the spot if that makes you not feel alone haha....my crossroad always has more backend than my vivid...and my anarchy was over under like crazy...id be figuring that hyroad quick!
In the bag [Infinite Physix, Volatility Torque, Night Road, Phaze III, Burner Solid, Hustle AU]

When a polished medium oil ball, like the Hy-Road, outhooks a dull oil loving ball like the Vivid, usually the "problem" is that there is not enough oil to conserve energy to use the Vivid. The White patterns (there are 3 of them) are not normally a heavy oil pattern. 2 of the Whites use around 18 & 19 ml of oil per lane, and the 3rd uses approx. 24 ml. Even the 24 ml is barely enough for a strong ball UNLESS you have more ball speed than you have revs.

Since your Hy-Road is hooking more, I suspect it is almost ideal for your delivery (rev rate, ball speed, tilt, rotation) for use on whichever White pattern you are bowling on.

Remember that resin balls are different from urethanes. WIth urethane the bigger hooking ball was always the strongest. With resins, the more expensive balls, like the Vivid use their strength to handle more oil than less expensive balls, but they need more oil to work properly. Without enough oil, they can leave weak leaves, like 5-7s, 8-10s or plain weak 10 pins.

thanks for clearing things up. this is what i was suspecting but wasn't entirely sure. This hyroad is by far the hardest hooking ball ive thrown, but my alleys dont put out major oil, and i didn't have this ball for previous tournaments to compare.

Also keep in mind that the Vivid is not a hook monster in the sense that it covers a lot of boards or makes a strong move off the spot. It handles oil, yes, but it has a more controlled move to the pocket.
