Title: Storm Prodigy: to shine or not to shine.
Post by: luvmykings on May 25, 2011, 01:40:32 PM

Thinking of getting Prodigy but need to know which is best (if there is one). Two people I know one has it otb finish and one has put a shine on his. Which works better the dull or the shine? Thx

Just Stormin' through!

This might be relevant to your question.  I have a Second Dimension.  Same cover as the Prodigy and though the core is different, the RG and Differential of the two cores are very close.  Out of Box (1500 grit with polish) it goes somewhat longer and has somewhat more snap on it.  When I took it to 4000 with no polish (also the OOB for a Prodigy), it started to move a bit earlier with a bit less backend.  I found this overall to be less usable for me since it required a fair amount of oil to use it.  I do throw about 16 mph with lower revs and usually need something more snappy, but if you are a higher rev player who needs something to tame down the backend a bit, you might have different results than I did.

The out of the box finish on the Prodigy is "4000 abralon," but that's just in name only. It's actually sanded with 500 abralon, then they skip straight up to 4000 abralon to finish. Therefore, the ball surface is a lot rougher than you might expect. I couldn't get the OOB surface through the heads no matter how much oil was out there, so I sanded it to 1000 and put a very light polish on it, and now it works great on broken down patterns with carrydown.

The answer is there is no best answer to give you. You just need to try it out and see if you like the reaction or not.

I got a good reaction out of it oob.  But I got an even better reaction out of it when I polished it.  so it's stayed polished.

I stone 8s and 9s like its cool...

I had a Prodigy and since sold it, it just didn't fit my game, but for many people it works very well. I first tried it OOB, but it seems to smooth and early for me.  Then I put a 1500 grit polished surface on it and it was much better, but still not fitting my game very well, I could only see using it sparingly so I sold it.  I did make a short video of it at 1500 grit polished if you want to check it out.
