Storm IQ Tour Solid
« on: October 16, 2014, 06:40:08 AM »
1st night with the IQ TOUR SOLID and I did something I haven't done in a long time. I used the same ball for all 3 games. Ball is simply amazing!! Only had to move a total of 4 boards all night. We had a lot of bowlers playing a similar area of the lane last night so moving only 4 boards and using only 1 ball is not the norm. Usually by the 3rd game I am on my 2nd or 3rd ball and playing a totally different part of the lane . Ball does not over react from the dry and holds nice on shots that i got in. Hits like a tank. I wish I wouldn't have waited so long to pick this ball up. There are a lot of great benchmark balls out there but you would be hard pressed to find a better one than the IQ TOUR SOLID.

You are seeing why so many serious tournament players always have one in their bag.  I have turned over my entire arsenal since I first got the IQ solid, but don't see myself getting rid of it soon.  I am not one to talk in terms of benchmark balls, but if there ever was such a thing the IQ is it.  I can get to the pocket with it on almost any condition, from any angle.  If it doesn't carry, I get a good idea from the look what I need to go to as an alternative.

Great point! These balls are often overlooked by the masses because "benchmark" reaction isn't usually ideal on house shots; nevertheless, if you bowl on something tricky, balls like this one are worth their weight in gold!

Personally, I've owned all three IQ Tour balls, and I love them all. The solid is great for figuring things out or trying to maintain control of the pocket. The Fusion is great when the heads start to go, but you still want consistency, and the Pearl is fantastic when you have to start moving in. I originally though the Pearl would only be a THS ball because of what I had heard about its motion, but it was actually exceptional on tougher patterns. The ball just went through the pins so well for me, it wasn't even funny. Sadly, it cracked big time while sitting on the rack in my basement. I am still saddened by it and am contemplating picking up another. It is THAT good.

I've been thinking about drilling one... Would a weaker or stronger layout be best if needed as a benchmark ball?

Thinking about one of these for a tricky AMF Syn THS that I am struggling on. I have a Fusion but I struggle with it carrying and bad leaves, yet it's been awesome at a different house.

How do you guy like to drill up the solid version. Weak? Strong? I am higher tilt and rotation. Thanks

I also have a Fusion to go with my Tour Solid. Fusion for me jumps off the dry and gets me in trouble with splits. If I miss a bit in, usually a 10 pin. Solid gives me miss room right and left. Miss out and it recovers and crushes the pocket.  Miss in, ball has plenty of power to carry 10 pin. Started last game with double, solid 8  double, solid 8. Ball hits that hard. I have my solid drilled pin up and left ball OOB. Fusion or IQTP never gave me this much room.

As a big fan of lower differential balls for many years.

For almost 12 years I loved my Columbia Icon2 (diff .36)and used it over and over and over at one of our top hat centers!   Bwahhhh, it split in two in unlucky year 13 of its life!.   It worked best 90 percent of the time at that center with nice backends and good stripper.

I was a fan of the Brunswick Twisted Fury pearl and Solid.

I now am using a lower flare Assymetric on my Wet Dry shot the Pyramid Chosen Path.  This ball with a diff of about .42(a little higher and asymmetry near .13) can really give the come back without too much midlane.

HOWEVER, the balls in the (.3X)have limitations!  They don't turn the corner on slop or for inside unless your friction is significant.  They don't have a ton of midlane but maybe if you have friction in the mids that is perfect.  Yes I can see them being great on league shots on the right for most of the set!

This video to follow backs up exactly my perceptions of these great answers to the question what ball can I use that will allow me to play the lanes most of my 3 game set and have hit and control.
Here's the video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5Dy3_3TUac  if you want to skip the whole thing go to the 1:01 minute mark.  Here you will see the IQ tour puke on an inside line and also be swamped by prop wash from a higher (slightly) flare ball.

For 12 years I have lobbied to have manufactures create these .3X diff balls to reduce midlane and now they have but here is what I see as their drawbacks.
1.  Drillers are drilling them too weakly not taking in to account their low diff.
2.  Bowlers with other top hat balls like the Punch out above drilled properly or my Freakn Frantic can get inside you and throw prop wash in to your line ending up making your too weakly drilled IQ tour look like the boat anchor it does in this Video.

I see it everyday.

Drill em right and use them right!  They are simply tools like any other 6 iron!

Regards,

Luckylefty
PS you should still carry a Driver and putter and wedge in your bag!  You get the drift.

I'm not on staff or anything.  It's just a really great ball.

The Storm IQ Tour Solid and the other IQ Balls have a great reputation amongst bowlers everywhere. Some balls aren't just hype, some balls are actually what they are advertised as.
