multiple VG's?
« on: November 22, 2009, 02:44:58 AM »
Just a random question: would you advice having multiple VG's is a 'smaller' arsenal (6-7 balls)?
Reason I ask this question is because I just love the reaction and the look the VG gives me on tuffer shots/oily shots. It creates another 2-3 boards of area where my other bowlingballs fail.  I'm talking about an arsenal for tournament play - non-league.
I'm thinking about having 3 VG's and 3 other balls for dryer conditions.
Current arsenal in my profile.

Thoughts welcome...  Good idea/ Bad idea ?

I think it makes complete sense and I do the same thing.  Anytime I find a ball I really like, especially if it gives me a good reaction on tougher shots, I will get 2 - 3 of the same ball.  Put a couple different layouts on them as well as surfaces and enjoy!

I don't think this is a great idea, if only you have a 6-7 ball arsenal. I do think it is an ok idea if you have a huge arsenal, and bowl for a living. With 6-7 balls, you want to be able to cover as many pattern variations as possible. What you will find, is sometimes a weight block or cover will just not work in a certain bowling center, or on a certain lane condition. Now, if you were to add a Virtual Energy, at least now you are adding a different cover with that core you like so much.
An "arsenal" of bowling balls is to give you different options to score no matter what is on the lanes. You want to be able to cover as many variables as possible with as few balls as possible, and do the rest with release and technique.

It really all depends.  For me, I have 2 Virtual Energies, and 2 Kinetic Energies that give me 4 entirely different looks.  However, I have another 5 balls surrounding that.

It can make sense to have multiple balls of the same kind - but I agree with tommygn that this would make most sense if these:
a) cover a range of lane conditions
b) do not overlap too much with the rest of the arsenal.

I could see a VG with a matte surface and a strong, rolly setup as a heavy oil ball, and as an arsenal addition a polished ball with a weaker stacked setup, with a high pin, for more length and pop - that would cover lighter conditions or later games, and also offer a different reaction shape. But, seriously, beyond that I do not see much sense in punching up more of the same stuff. If you need a different reaction or utility, look for an approriate ball basis and do not force a ball to be what it was not designed for. This IMHO rarely yields good results.

@ Tommy: I don't bowl for a living, but I do play about 2-3 tournaments a month outside league bowling.
7 ball arsenal is what I got now, so if I where to add 1-2 VG's I will have a bigger arsenal
I was also thinking about adding a VE, but I have already got a Rogue Cell for a step under the VG. For the moment a 2nd VG appeals me more than adding a VE between Rogue & VG.

@ dizzy: I got that VG pin up atm, so thinking about buying another one and go pin down and more surface, it's either that or a bounty hunter or something allong that line.

I agree with dizzy.  For example:

I have one VE drilled 50* 4.5 65* at 1000.  I will look to use this on the heavy oil.  It gives me a very strong, continuous arc.

I have a second VE that is drilled 63* 4.5 20* at 4000.  I can use this on medium to medium heavy.  It goes long and is very angular.
