Title: Why was the post, NEW STORM SITE!!!!, locked?
Post by: charlest on December 15, 2008, 10:37:25 AM
I also thought it was sluggish and poorly designed.

Why is the ball description separate from the core and coverstock specifications? That's not a lot of verbiage. Should be on the same page as it was before.

I noticed that as well charlest.  Why?  Maybe the post was getting too much attention? Either way, I disagree with you on the Storm site when it comes to design.  I think it is far and away above all other bowling sites and most sites in general for that matter.

The videos are very choppy bogging down my resources.

Personally, I do not like the hi-res, broad design. But at least you get to the balls directly, and there is no automatic re-direction to the int. section if the server notices your origin...

I think the website is very nice. Clean and Easy to navigate. Very nice use of the Flash plugins and Adobe effects from a design aspect. I can see where some of the hgh end features might bog down some older systems or slower bandwidth though. Unfortunatley these are things that you have to deal with when designing a new technologically advanced site.

Is that Ray's Pro Shop, Rays Original Pro Shop or Famous Rays Original Pro Shop? LOL

In case no one gets it, that is a big battle amongst NYC pizza lovers. The famous "Ray's" pizza joints all claim to be the originator of the 'New York' style pizza.

The appearance seems fine. Loading now seems to take much longer. My machine is fairly fast and I have a high speed internet connection. So that is not the cause.

Problem is you cannot design a web site to be used only on the fastest and latest technology, IF you want many people to come to use it. You have to design for the median user and let those with the lastest and greatest reap their own rewards. This is especially true with a manufacturers' website where they want to be seen and to be accessible to many people across a broad spectrum. This is all part of usability and interface design.

Basically, your business web site cannot be a playground for the web designer.

I find it to slow and clunky using a DSL setup and fast computer, video's are not able to be paused and let load up like on youtube.

I want some revolutionary developer to take a hint from google and Windows 2000 and go backwards when speed was awesome and gui, flash, java, graphics, and all the other BS to entertain the average moron didn't exist.  My wish is that there is a smart programmer somewhere today in class with a plan to revolutionize the internet, operating systems, and programs as a whole!

Any website that is geared towards customers should be designed to work well on 56K.  If it can't run on 56K, then fix it.  I am using the Pittsburgh Supercomputer backbone here at work with a very fast internet connection and so many sites run like s***!

The videos are painful to watch now.  They say a word & pause for more uploading, say another, stop, wait, 2 more words..... on & on..... If it ain't broke, why fix it?  The rest of the site is ok.  Shirts are waaaaaayyy too expensive.  Sorry Storm, no offense.  I love my Storm arsenal though...

Just FYI, I tried to download one single file outside of the clunky Flash interface, the ~6 MB 2008 ball catalog, and the download speed was roughly 12kb/sec.  That's just horrendously slow for file downloading speeds.

Makes me wonder if their server(s) wasn't(weren't) upgraded at the same time. if the server can't handle the volume of users and the download speed that videos require, then it will bog down, as several people have noted.

Their server's always been pretty awful (I saw the old site load slowly, if at all, many times), so that wouldn't surprise me.

I downloaded the same file and the download speed for me was around 80kb/sec..

Videos loads quick too..  No problems at all with the new Storm site..

Amen, and just what charlest stated before: on a business site, you have to make sure that a LOT of people find EASY access, have it displayed well and that the navigation as simple and self-explaining as possible.

You can make a decent websight for people with 56k connections. But when your cell phone is able to have a couple of mbits/s connection, do you care about 56k users? Ofcource not, this is 2008, not 1998. Im a customer and i want pictures that is bigger than 320x280 in resolution. I want videos, i want everything you cant handle with a 56k modem.
Don't rant about website that ignoring 56kers, its technology, get used to be outdated.

The server's running much better today.  Literally over 10 times faster than the day before.  140kb/sec download speed today!

It's probably just low traffic at the moment, and you get enough bandwidth for a quick download. Just because your modem says "50MBit", you never know how good (or bad) the connection actually is, and in this case complicated websites are... frustrating.

Wow.  Was night & day difference from the other day.  Videos started playing right away.  Watched a few of them w/no problems at all.  I'm liking the site better & better.  I like being able to look at the discontinued balls easier now too.

Its been interesting to watch all  the comments back and forth.  Ultimately, I think it is a step in the right direction and it shows me that Storm actually cares about making a difference.

Many people are afraid of change and it is that fear that binds you.  The bottom line is, that in order to achieve anything you have to take some risks and I think Storm has done just that.  Yes, it's got it's issues, but what site doesn't?  Is there a bowling site that compares? Where? Tell me!

If you want to stick with morse code, then fine, but don't be so quick to poke fun at those using this new thing called a phone.

You are the minority!

The problem with alot of the newer tools today for website design is that they are targeted towards higher end users with appropriate broadband. The problems with the videos not streaming fast enough could be a problem with their Site Host's bandwidth or streaming capabilities as they used to load just fine?

Like anything new I'm sure they will iron out the bugs.
