Ball to play down and in from first or second arrow?
« on: March 27, 2016, 09:31:23 PM »
Hi! I'm looking to buy a new Storm ball. I want to be able to use it to throw straight down the second arrow and hook into the pocket. What balls should I be looking at? How should it be drilled? My revs are low/medium. I have an old Brunswick Radical Inferno and that is way too strong to play down the second arrow.

You can also look at the Storm Ride.  Joy Ride if you need a little more pop on the back.   8)

They way the THS are set up, it's hard to think anyone can play up 5 with medium cover balls, one with Lower RG, and somewhat early roll layout. But, a buddy of mine does this and has averaged 215+ bowling up 5 at two different houses with two different lane surfaces. He doesn't throw like Eugene, but in the average speed range. I'm 16.5-17 at the pin deck and I roll faster than he does.

If I were to play up 5, I'd be using my breeze with higher grit or my spare ball. But my buddy can manipulate his game to play this area and camp out. AND, without seeing a paper coach...we call him mini WRW lol
Does a round object have sides? I say yes, pizza has triangles..

A buddy of mine, used to be a EBI sraffer guy, DESTROYS THS up 5.  Averages likee 240+ everywhere. It's insane.

I would love to have that ball also. It really depends on how long the oil is. If you are playing on 41 feet of oil the second arrow or ten board would be where I would start also. If the oil is shorter you will need to belly the ball out to the 6 or 7 board. My revs and ball speed are similar to yours and I like the Roto-Grip Hetic for that shot, but even then I usually need to project it out a little. Trying to go straight up ten or straight up any board is tough for a medium speed low rev bowler. There are lots of good choices in the Storm and Roto-Grip lines. See if you can eyeball someone with similar speed and revs in league rolling that line. That is always my starting point. Reading reviews always leave me frazzled.

I'd probably lean towards the Ride or Joy Ride.  Both are going to have a weaker core/cover combo that will allow you to play much straighter.

If you're open to something outside of Storm, a ball like the upcoming Motiv Venom Cobra could really fit the bill.  That ball is designed for length and backend, similar to the Joy Ride.  Motiv is probably the closest to Storm overall but could potentially be a better fit as their ball reactions tend to be a bit smoother overall.

My vote goes to the Ride. I shot my 2nd 300 in a month with a pin down Ride tonight. Ball hits so hard when you can play up the boards. Also great for spares.

You'll just have to really "square up" all of the pitch users doink tens all night long while being locked into the pocket.  In other words don't try to hook it like a reactive.

Dont get me wrong if their totally fried, the pitch black/blue kills it, but for 3 games in league im a not a believer in urethane...at the weakest...its weak reactives..

I am able to manipulate the lower end Roto stuff as it really gets down the lane and responds to hand positions really well.

I still use a 2012 shout consistently as my super dry ball, but need to go up 2-3rd arrow especially late in the 3rd game to seal the deal with brackets, survivor, etc.

Yeah, I still have my orange and blue Shout too. It's a great ball to play straighter with when the lanes are dry. For me it gets a little squirrely if I try to play deeper and/or more inside, but given the OP is looking for something to play down and in with I would definitely recommend the solid Loco since it's basically the same ball as the Shout.

Although if you don't mind waiting three weeks Storm is releasing the Match and Match Pearl. They will be using the reactor coverstocks (most recently seen on the Rides) with a new core. I'm betting either of those would fit really well for what you're looking for too.

Sounds like you throw it same as I do, I don't move off of those lines, if I don't have to, just ball down to what works for me. I start with Optimus Solid or Marvel S then ball down to the Sky Rocket. Up the 8 or 10 all night long
