Normally I wouldn't care to spend the money for a used, older ball but this ball is one of the exceptions. This was one of my favorite balls in the late 90's. Only my 3rd reactive ever had and when I saw Brian Himmler and Robert Smith bowl with this ball I had to have it. It had such an aggressive, early reaction and at the time made my Brunswick Danger Zone look like a pearlized urethane! I got rid of the ball and sold it to a guy along with 2 other balls only because they were 14 pounds and moved to 15. How I wish they would have reissue this ball in the exact model.
For years I've been attempting to get a NIB in a 15 with this and nearly impossible. I came close on eBay but got outbid everytime. Last few times I found a used one all in good shape but some people like to do what I do and outbid at the last second. So this time I just bid and put another 5 dollars to attempt to make sure my bid. Fresh resurface and won it for 30 bucks.

Uh, dude, they just reissued the El Nino as the El Nino Returns. You could get a brand new one if you wanted one that bad.

That El Nino Returns is not the same ball as the original. I belive it's closer to the 2000 version.

El Nino returns has an "aggressive" reactive cover where the original had Curelyon 2 solid (not sure if they are the same or not). ALso the core shape is the same but the numbers are different:
El Nino Original from 98:
2.490 RG
.065 Differential
El Nino Returns:
2.470 RG
.052 Differential
Similar but not the same, El Nino 2000 was a particle pearl with a different core.
I had 3 El Ninos all of them were great balls (I almost bid on the 15lber on ebay recently as well).

greenefam,
if i remember, isn't the original el nino solid? if so, it cant be a remake since the el nino returns is pearl..
The original El Nino was a solid - solid Curelyon2 which by today's standards would be a relatively mild solid. The El Nino Returns is a 1000 grit pearl with the same core. Personally I'd go with that over a resurfaced 9 year old ball. I think you will get darn close to the original's look especially with the advances in lane oils over a 9 year period.

I really can't see how. An updated sanded pearl reactive as compared to a light load polished Accu-tread particle is really apples and oranges. The El Nino Gold may be a closer comparison but again it is a solid vs. a pearl. At least in this comparison they are both box 1000 grit finish.
Personally if I had a longing for an older ball (as I do with the original Eraser) I'd either find someone hiding an new in box ball in a closet or I'd be just as happy for the company to come out with a remake (see AMF Nighthawk, Roto-Grip SD-73, El Nino Returns, etc.). The remake may not be exactly the same ball but I would venture a guess that the remake will take newer lane conditions into account much better than a used ball. Brian, I hope you are happy with the resurfaced ball I am just expressing the opinion that given a choice I'd go with the El Nino Returns.
FYI, 14lb on eBay -

A seller on eBay has the ORIGINAL EL NINO in his store in both 15 and 16 lbs. Can't remember the name of the seller, but just do a search for EL NINO in bowling balls and it will come up.

Wonder if the El Nino returns is closer to the El Nino Wrath

Boy I'm glad I got this ball. Aside from the pro shop driller messing up and drilling me grips insted of fingertip drilled (miscomunication), the ball was as great as I remembered it. Shot my second perfect game in league tonight with it. Worked great on the short oil pattern and really could cover some boards with it.
