I drilled this ball a little less than a week ago.  I am very very pleased with it it hits like truck and sends the pins every were.  So far I have found this ball to be pretty versatile on the lanes but have not yet had bone dry lanes. i highly recommend this ball.

Got this ball about 3 weeks ago and really wasn't too comfortable with it until a few days ago.  The ball was left in its sanded finish.  It was pin in, with the pin lower in grip (to produce earlier reaction with forward roll) and the static up, the mass bias was about an inch below the thumb to the left.

Our standard house shot is 39 foot of oil, top hat, very easy.  On the typical house shot the ball was just too much cover, i could find a decent line but i had given up my area that i usually had with my mojo playing about 5 boards tighter.  On a 42 foot sport pattern the ball got down the lane considerably well and made a very smooth but aggressive move to the pocket, i had more area on a sport pattern than ever before.  And finally thursday night i pulled it out on my second shift league for my last two games, 227 pulled one and didn't hit it and left a pocket 7-10 in the midst of 8 in a row.  Next game, 299, flat seven pin.

But MAN DOES THIS BALL HIT AND CARRY LIGHT.  I don't know if i have ever thrown a ball that carries as well as this one, its amazing the hits i get with it.

overall i really like the performance of the mutant, when a medium speed stroker with 12 revs can aggressively play 4th arrow and the lanes aren't fryed it has to be a good ball. Solid 9 out of 10.  Makes a great compliment to my mojo.

my current bowling status: tweener with good amount of hand.

lane condition: long oil wall 3 x 3 (wide and long) in one house, 10 X 10 wall shot at another.

ball drilling:  Not an proshop groupie, ball 15 3oz top wt. 4 oz; pin 3 inches out.  Pin below the ring finger with the cg kicked out and a balance hole near my pap.

Review:  my ball speed is 15 mph and  on soup I play up the boards and this ball rolls longer than I thought it would but what track is known for is backend and boy does this ball have that!!!  The hit is really good.  Believe other reviewers when they say that this ball hits like a mack truck because this is true.  One of the hardest hitting balls I ever bowled with.  When the lanes break down however you have to really be able to read the lanes and adjust or put this one away.  the backend on broken down condition will take off on you and leave you heart broken.  It's very controllable and that's also a plus.  Overall this ball is a great ball for oily conditions and can be used by tweener and crankers.  I will rate this ball 8.5 on a scale from 1 to 10.

Update

Still a beaty, those eyes aahhh so lovely...wait a storm in a bowling alley??? (Mutant...X-Men...Storm...Halle Berry...get it???...Har Har, I'm my own best audience.

This ball is a Jeckyl and Hyde ball, pins fly yes and flies fast those buggers, but often only 9 fly and one always seem to want to take the bus.

In oil this baby will hook and it hooks hard you can see it go and when the mass bias begins moving to its preferential axis.  I do not have any other balls that will hook in oil, if i play the oil it is usually pretty straight and tight and if I want to play with the hooking line hookers I will have to chuck into the dry and hope not to get STD (that over under std is the worst)

Pins tend to stand more when I play end over end so side rotation is the way to go for me and this Mutant.

Its a love hate relationship, but I'm still taking her to Vegas...hope she puts out when we get there.

I got this ball polished with about 1500 on it. The pin is under the ring finger and the mass bias is in the strong position. This ball will hook in oil but it does not cover a ton of boards. It is meant for a strong consistent roll. Mine gives me plenty of room outside, but because of the early roll i cannot pull it much. I played on my new league shot on top of unstripped backends. There is about 50 units in the heads, tapers down to three on the outside. Since the middle is an oil spill i can play it from 13 to bout 7, from the oil line to just bumping the lighter oil. I didn't experience any rollout just a smooth arcing movement off the dry. Overall a solid bll for squirrely and oiler but no flooded lanes.

Thanks for reading my review. This Ball from Track came out in January of 2003 and has been our stores #1 $200+ Price Point Ball. This lightly sanded low load particle fits many different styles of players so I decided to give it a try. With tournaments coming up such as State and ABC in Knoxville, I wanted a ball that was sanded for oil and still one that got through the heads clean. This ball was the answer.

What Track did with this Ball over my favorite ball of the year, “The Freak” was a ball that Revved Quicker, but had better skid/flip ball motion than the freak. So this ball allows me to play the outsides with success but has enough recovery to play the inside angles also.

Examples of this are that I played 4th arrow in State Team with big out of bounce to the right of 3rd arrow and shot 670. But down in Knoxville I played the gutter shot approximately 2-3rd board and shot 711 in doubles with the ball.

Specs on this ball is a RG of 2.50 which helps get this ball through the heads with a Wow 2 Particle from Columbia 300 which also helps, WOW 2 is Columbia’s lower load particle, which make the ball react more like a reactive than particle. The differential is a .056, which will give you a 4-6” flare on the ball, that is what helps the hook down the lane. The Determinator Spin Time on this ball is 8 seconds which I believe is Track’s and the industry’s quickest, which means guys with not a lot of hand can get this ball revving up for them with very little effort.

In closing I have seen strokers to tweeners to crankers use this ball with very good success and personally give this ball the Ball of the Year award due to it’s versatility and amount of sales that this ball did for us at our stores. You cannot go wrong with this choice and thanks for reading my review.

check my profile for specs

I drilled up a mutant last week as well. I drilled it with the pin halfway in between my bridge and grip center, cg out and lowered towards the thumb and mb 2 inches below and right of the thumb with a x-hole about 5 inches over from the thumb.. This ball flies!!! It gets exceptional length, and explodes left at about 38 feet. The hit is a little weak, but due to such a strong angle of entry. This ball hooks a ton in oil, but I don't see it as a coast to coast ball. the more boards you cover, the weaker the hit, but that's how I see it as I throw mine. I think I you play up the boards in the oil, or keep it tight, you experience the true performance of this ball.

control-8
versatility-9
hook-9.5

I'll give the mutant a 9

I've had this ball for about a month and have only 9 games on it, but I discovered that it's the heavy-oil ball I've been looking for.  I have it set up like this:
  • Pin:  1.25" to the right of my ring fingerhole
  • Mass Bias:  Directly below thumbhole (part of icon is drilled away)
  • Weight Hole 4" right and 3/4" down from ring fingerhole.

I used this ball in a tournament 4 days after it was drilled.  It is the first 15# ball I ever threw so I never really got used to it during the set, but I was happy with what it did.  Last week, I pulled it out for league when I figured out I was having a lot of mechanics and timing problems.  This ball exploded into the pocket while I was trying to iron everything out and I shot a 651 having never ironed out anything.  This past Monday, I pulled it out for practice on a fresh pattern that my usual strike ball skid through.  The Mutant couldn't miss the pocket no matter far far right I threw it.  It left a lot of single pins the farther it went out, but simple adjustments started carrying those single pins.

It can be too much if I have to give it a lot of room, but it's been awesome when thrown over my normal line.  This one is definately going to Reno next year, and I'm looking forward to those tournaments I didn't do as well in last year.  Track did a great job with this one.

Just had my Mutant done today and had to do my review.  It is layed out with the pin 1" from my ring finger, the CG is 3" below and 3" right of my center span. The MB is 1" below and 1" right of my thumb hole.  A weight hole was required for removal of 1/8th of an ounce.  It is located 1+1/2" down from my PAP. The condition was 38 feet wall shot with a small amount of carry down on synthetic lanes in good shape.
Whew!
Now, I started with my 2.0 Quantum, standing 20,slid from 15 board to 8 and it just hung and hit the 6 pin. Picked up my Mutant and SLAM! right in the hole!!  Now I know the Denim 2.0 Quantum is not a big hooking ball, but that is what I had for oil.  I could force it and make it hook, but as we all know, when you force a shot, well it just sucks.  I don't have to force my Mutant and that is all I can ask of a bowling ball. The rest is up to the bowler.
So. Yes, I really like Track's Mutant

Finally got back onto Ballreviews.com after some time off. Had the Mutant since April. Wasn't impressed with it at first, since it was a mid-season replacement of my Apex Adrenaline for a heavy oil ball. (had to drop down to 15#) After I bowl a torney alittle north of where I live, this ball became my new favorite oil ball of all time. For me the Mutant seemed to get the standard early roll that heavy oil balls tend to get, but it had a nice move on the back ends. At the tournament I started with a Jungle Green Predator that was sanded, but couldn't get it to make the turn to take the 4-pin out, so the next block I try the Mutant, I moved a few boards deeper, went 245-187(opened the first)-245. Since then I have had a 299 at a local match play league, where the lanes were real tight until they resurfaced them. The pin on the ball is about 1" to the right of the ring finger (RH) and the MB is just slightly kicked out to the right of being right under the pin. Hope this review helps anyone looking for one of the best (IMHO) oil balls, and one of the best Track balls in awhile.

This ball kicks butt. Just got it Tuesday. Already shot 279 stupid 4 pin like always. Drill up as a full roller. It rolls better for me than any of my other Track balls. Great job again Track.

Drilled this ball with a four by four layout. Left at factory finish this ball rolls great. good early roll to stay in the juice and the ball don't quit on the back. Good job by Del and Track.

Drilled mine up 2 weeks ago.
It hits great!!! Factory finish with a pin at a number 2 position and MB at a #2 position. Carries like hits well. This is not a ball for drier lanes. It needs oil. A great compliment to my bag.

Been working with this ball for a few weeks now and thought I would share my results.

We drilled several of these balls but primarily used one left-hand player and one right-handers for our review information.  For the left-hander we placed the pin next to the ring finger (4" from his pap) and the mb half way between the center line of his grip and his val.  This required an extra hole, which we placed 1 1/2" below the midline, 5 1/2" from the grip center.  We left the ball in it's box condition originally and have sanded and polished it several times since.  The ball was intended for this player to create a stronger mid-lane reaction on longer oil.  He doesn't have a very strong release and throws about 19 mph with minimal axis rotation.

The ball was nearly perfect for this player right away.  The ball began to rev right off his hand, read the mid-lane and arced hard to the pocket, which improved his carry which was light with his other equipment.  He liked the reaction so much that he tried to polish it for regular league conditions but there were better choices in his bag, whereas the Mutant required a little force to get down the lane.  Restoring the ball to it's dull but smooth box condition brought the reaction back nicely and he is still using it on the longer oil he sees from time to time.

The right-hander was looking for something that would also read the mid-lane more effectively than his X-Factor. This player is similar to the lefty but with slightly less ball speed, slightly more axis rotation and more revolutions.  The drill pattern was also similar, using a pin out 4", the pin was placed 4" from the pap but with the mb on the val.  The extra hole was 1" in diameter, and was placed 1 1/2" below the mid line, 6" from the grip center and was pitched to avoid drilling into the mb part of the core.  This ball was also left in it's out of the box condition and has yet to be adjusted.  The Mutant was again perfect for what was intended, it began to rev off the bowler's hand, started to react noticeably earlier than the X-Factor and arced hard in the back end for more than enough angle to carry.  The ball held the line nicely when pulled into the heavier oil with enough contact to maintain carry.  On the down side, if the ball encountered friction before the intended break point, it was a high hit to be sure.  In keeping with that theme, the ball was also sensitive to changes in the front part of the lane, when the head oil began to break down, the Mutant was tough to hold back.  We did observe that as the player moved in deeper, the ball was able to continue to carry the corners as long as it was able to save some energy in the heads.

Neither of these players could be considered power players, we can certainly imagine people with that kind of game having problems with this model on anything less than heavy oil.  The other caution would be that players with low speeds should be carefully about the drilling pattern they select.  We can see this ball changing direction too early and/or sharply if drilled with a pin/mb placement that is too strong.  Apart from that, the Mutant is a very nice piece of equipment for many players from stroker to tweener looking for a stronger mid-lane reaction on longer patters.

Been working this ball for a couple of months now. One of the best track made in my opinion. I bowl at a house in NJ where they put a heavy coat of oil down on the lanes. This ball handles great good solid hit and great backend movement. I recently shot a 683 set with it and was impressed. I have this ball and the Hammer vicious attack. And though i like both balls. This one hits harder and has just as much movement.
