*Updated* Need Coaching Advice
« on: August 18, 2007, 01:39:22 AM »
Ok heres the deal, I've struggled since I got back into bowling with my ball speed, and have been told by many that I need to slow it down.  I'm unsure of the exact speed but if I had to guess I'd say that I probably throw around 17-18mph.  The problem is that I just don't feel comfortable throwing any slower.  So the problem is my current equipment(Arsenal Agressive, Passion, and Reaction Rev) is just not working out for me, every shot either arcs to strong and I miss left consistantly no matter where I move, or it just burns out and never gets back to the pocket.  I typically play down and in because I've got a low rev rate, but would love to know what I can do to build up some revs.  Would I benefit from a different type of ball/drilling, or should I focus more on building up revs?  Any input would be greatly appreciated as I've got to get more consistant before fall league starts.

high ball speed and low revs dose not equal burnout.I would suggest you spend some money on coaching and work on you're game.could also be from you're equipment may be too agressive right now for the summer shot/lite oil.

Matt,

Do you have the means to have yourself recorded so we could view your style?

Carl, possibly can get some video on Monday but I might the quality might not be the greatest because I don't have a way to convert with my actual video camera, so I'll have to settle for my digital camera most likely.  Thanks in advance.

For the limited time I have to watch right now, I would say you need to start the ball moving sooner in your approach.  Your second step, and ball movement need to start more in sync.  Looks like your step is over before the ball starts moving.

This should be ok though since I actually have 5 steps in my approach, right?

Smokey469...
The advice the guys are giving are some of the things I see also. I think a picture is worth a thousand words or in this case a video. The falling off at the line is usually caused by the timing being off. Holding the ball waist high instead of lover in your video. This could help get the ball in a pendulum swing to help straighten the bent elbow that we see in your video. Ball waist high and line up with your target. It looks like you hit up on the ball get the ball out on the lanes but this sometimes causes the pull left or miss right a couple of boards. I am enclosing a link that I really like and if you watch it real close some of the things we are telling you should be worth the thousand words. In the video, Wlm Classens uses four steps but you should see where the ball should be. In your case the second step.

Hey guys, I went into the shop last night to drill a ball up for a kid, so when I was finished I decide to roll a couple of games to try and work on a 4 step approach instead of 5.  Well after averaging only 170 this summer, I went 192 in the first game(still trying to get comfortable with the approach) and then 219 the second game.  So the new footwork has started to help my game already, now if I can just get some tips on tuning up my release I'll be great.  Thanks for the great advice so far guys, keep it coming!

Well I've got to the point where I'm comfortable with my 4 step approach now, but I still seem to be having trouble building up my revs, any more suggestions guys...

Smokey469..
Give us an updated video after you have changed to four steps, so we can see what you are doing.

I just want to ask anyone els. Does it look like he might be muscling the ball. It looks to me that you force the arm foward on your second step, and then pull it back causing the elbow to bend. I don't know about the rest of the guys but I really see the muscle problem right at the line at the point of the release when you lift out of the ball. It looks like as you lift you are not letting it just fall of your hand. It looks almost like you are giving it a little push onto the lane.
