14 Pound ?
« on: June 13, 2006, 12:44:13 PM »
Just curious if any of you trackers throw 14.  I have been thinking about dropping down, but I am scared I am going to lose hitting power and carry? Comments?

Thanks,

Doug

I believe Rick (tenpins) throws 14...and if you have ever watched any of his vids, the balls still hit and carry very well from what I have seen.

I've been using 14lbs for the last three years, having dropped from 15. I've seen no difference between carry between the two weights. I've raised my average some 16 pins...from 174 to 190 during that time.

I dropped to 14# a bit over a year ago, then several months later a number of people convinced me to return to 15# because they said they hit harder, carry better, mix pins better and etc so I changed back to 15# only to see my scores "go south". To sum it up, all of this talk everyone told me about 15# is totally BS. I have returned to 14# and now have more speed, more revs, better carry and pin mix and higher scores than I did with 15#.......And yes, I am doing this with 14# Track balls. (see my profile)

I just moved back up to 14# after using 12# for about 2 months since I was off for over a year, so far I notice increased carry until I get tired from the heavier weight, then I start carrying like Excaliber(just kidding Ex)

I used to throw 15, but went down to 14lb. I like it. More control and versatility. No carry/hit problems with me. If you throw the ball well, there won't be to much of a difference in pin action.

I have been using 14 for about 2.5 years and I don't see any difference in carry.
If anything I think I carry better with 14 than I did 15.
I leave quite a few 9 pins so I don't think that there is a lack of hit.
I feel that I can do more with the ball using 14, I can more easily change my axis tilt, axis rotation and can get an extra MPH of speed when I have to. I saw about a 10% increase in my rev rate too.

If you think about it, it makes sense that I would actually gain carry.

15# - 14# - .066 decrease
Ave MPH 15 to 16 - .066 increase
Ave RPM 270 to 300 - .11 increase

Based on that the 14# ball actually has more Momentum and Rotational Energy/Angular Kinetic Energy. My physics are a bit rusty so I don't remember all the formulas to come up with hard numbers but I do know that momentum is Mass x Velocity and if a rotating object has more momentum it also has more Kinetic Energy.

hmm, i was actually thinking about going up from 14 to 15.  My friends use 15 and seems to hit much much harder.  Pins fly when they hit the pocket with at 15...my 14 seems to just send the pins low making my strikes depend on messengers to do the damage.

If you have a proper release, the change from 15 to 14 should not be an issue. Ball is easier to handle, and you might even get more revs and speed with a better control. Should compensate for the drop in weight without a problem.

Hey Doug, how've you been bud?

Yes, I have been throwing 14 for about 4 yrs now without a problem.  One question, does your speed and revs match up?  If you normally can match up or a little more rev to speed dominant, you can easily make this transition without sacrificing any hitting power.

As mentioned by Dizzy, it also offered me more wrist action and revs which in turn translated into more hook and power if desired.

My scoring remained the same, put up a couple of 300's and averaged the same, 210+ (still no practice..lol) so there was basically no change in that aspect.  Hope this helps you some...

Rick,

I am doing well.  My speed and Revs are pretty close to being matched and I would say slightly more revs to speed.  I think for now I am going to stick to low 15 # balls.  Like 15lbs 0oz to 15lbs 2oz.  Thanks guys for all the replies.
