Replacing old with new---need opinions
« on: June 01, 2010, 10:13:56 PM »
I'm currently using the Rising series and I want to update my bag.
The best ball in the series for me is the Uprising. This ball is all I need for the heavy to medium heavy conditions and I will have one of these in my bag.

My thoughts were getting the 505A for the later games and lighter oil.

For the true medium and THS conditions I am looking at the new 920. I know it's too early to get a read on this ball but the research I've done looks promising.

Any suggestions or opinions will be appreciated.

I understand bowler type, conditions, drill, etc. will be factors but all I'm looking for here is general opinions based on ball characteristics. I'll fine tune them to fit my game.
Thanks.

The 505A is a good choice for when you need to move inside and have an angular reaction on the backend.

For true mediums and house shots, the new 920 might be too strong.  The 715C would be a great choice for medium oil and house conditions.  The ball motion is very smooth and continuous.

If you can find the 505C, it would also be an option for medium oil and house conditions.  The 505T will be released later this summer and could also be an option beneath the 715C.

I must agree with you on the UpRising.  I have two drilled and two NIB stashed away for a later date.  Hope this helps.

I was able to drill my 920Ts last night. I drilled them pretty strong as I want to use them on the fresh of the PBA patterns. So far after practicing with them on our broken down house shot, the ball got through the fronts enough to where it didn't burn up all of its energy. But it does look like you will need some head oil for this ball to save some energy. This ball will shine more along the lines of medium heavy to heavy(with the right surface). Oh and can't forget, this ball looks fantastic. I will post some pics and a full review after I bowl tonight. The ball is a dark red and looks good. Think Mission red but two shades darker.

Direct..
I was looking at the 715c for the house shot. The 505s are cheap right now so that's a for sure. I'm from the school that believes the cover stock is the most important factor in ball reaction. The UMP gen2 is the cat's azz for me. The 920T with the Gen2 and Gen3 blend is a must have.
I will watch for a 715c at a good price and add that to the mix. Both my sons bowl so if I get an overlap I'll pass one of them down.

Curt...
I'm just too jealous to respond. Please post your findings when you get some games on the 920s. I'll be over my ball envy by then and I might gain some insight as how to drill mine when it comes.

Thanks for the replies. Any other opinions are welcome.

505a with strong drilling and the correct surface for your game is the number one choice.i have 920 t.bowled almost 3 games.still deciding.but when you have some many choices it is hard.the 920t can hold a house shot for 3 games.i have the 930 920a 920t 715a 505c 505a.and 607a on order.they all have a time and place.the 505a
and the 930t are my two favorites.heavy and light are the only two you need.

Zorch..
Thanks for the input.
I have not found a heavy oil condition I could not play with the Uprising.
That rules out the 930 and 920.
I've decided on the 505A and the 920T to go under the Uprising.
This will give me:
Uprising (solid) for med heavy-heavy
920T (hybrid solid) for med heavy-medium
505A (pearl) medium- fresh light
Ebonite Ying/Yang (poly) spares and toast

I have three different releases I can play comfortably so this should give 12 different looks on the lanes.
If the 920T doesn't work out the 715C looks like good substitute.
I do have a similar three ball setup using other companies but a friend gave me the Rising series and I LOVED the Uprising. The other two were too condition specific so I thought I would check out the newer stuff. If it works out in summer league I will get the same thing for fall leagues.

heavy and light are the only two you need.

This would be true if I bowled THS but I see more challenging conditions in the leagues I bowl in. I enter a lot of tournaments and bowling on THS would only give me an inflated average and a false sense of my abilities.

i agree with someone here that said the 505 series balls were very under rated.the 505a ball is one of the better release by track i think.the 930 will roll in the oil.the 505a is a great house shot and light oil tournament ball hands down.i took the factory polish off not sanded but just enough to remove the heavy polish.it hooks consistant and great.this ball reminds me of my favorite house ball the kinetic energy.it is the modern match for the ke.very consistant.

Ah, the Mean Machine. Certainly one of my favorite Track balls. I would say out of the current balls the 920T would be the most similar to the MM. Other ones you may want to look at is the Rising SE or Kinetic Energy.

d_r76,

Thanx for the reply...will look at all of your recommendations.  My proshop also appears to have a really good price on the Evolve ($150)...any thoughts on that ball? It should not overlap any of your picks should it?  I am just getting back into the game seriously after a hiatus - current arsenal is Total Shock & Awe, MM, and XCeption 5.0, and as mentioned, looking to update...though the MM still seems to work for me in practice.
