For the drilling gurus...
« on: July 07, 2006, 08:39:13 AM »
If you are a low track bowler and your balls are drilled that way and you change the way you throw the ball, coming straighter thru the release instead of turning the wrist too soon (which causes the low track), would the ball revert to the way it was drilled? In other words, still carry the same low track? This may be a stupid question, but, enlighten me please. I'm getting more revs on the ball and see a much more powerful roll in the ball, but the track in the ball is the same, no matter how I release it. And yes, Ive had some of the better bowlers in my area watch me and they're not sure about this either.

The simple answer is no.  By changing how you roll the ball (essentially where the track is located), you are changing your positive axis point.  Raising the track generally puts the PAP further away from the center of grip...If you had a leverage type layout before (3.5" pin to PAP), it is likely a 4"-5" pin to PAP layout now (depending on how drastic the release change was).  A longer pin to PAP distance results in lower flare and generally more length.

Hey freak,

There have been differences in opinion about this but I have personally seen and proven to a few ball review members here on how our track changes to a particular layout.

If I throw anything short of a leverage distance (3 3/8), my 1st oil line on the ball lowers considerably.  I threw a Rico drilled ball and it went inverted from my normal track of 2 inches away from fingers and 1 inch from thumb.  I've played with many layouts and have seen the differences, I'm not changing release when I throw these either.

So in answer to your question, if you raised your track by staying behind it more, it is possible that the pin position for you on your current equipment is at a leverage to lower then leverage distance which can pull the block down faster and give you the same lower track that you are seeing.

Best one to date is doing a 9:00 pin from cg in palm which changed my inverted guy into a full roller...the weight block literally pulled it the other way.

Thanks for your responses guys. Since I posted this on Friday, I went down to the lanes with an old plastic spare ball and threw it and just as I suspected I had a much different track. The track was about 1" to the left of my thumb and about 2 to 2 1/2" to the left of the fingers, and a lot bigger track. I'm buying a new Machine and I'm going to have it drilled according to the track on the spare ball and see what happens.

I cannot believe I overlooked this thread.

The others are correct, HOWEVER..it is possible to change your release and ball track but your PAP remain the same.

Well, EX since I got you and Rick involved let me explain a little further. For a lot of years I used the Cobra wrist support and I did real well with it but when I ran into a longer pattern I had a heck of a time getting the ball to do anything. I bowled pretty crappy in the state tourney and decided to go over my whole game, equipment and all. What I discovered was that while the support helped me to gain more spin on the ball in lighter, shorter conditions, it was killing me on anything else. The support was naturally causing me to turn the ball early and because of the support keeping my wrist straight, it would cause me to release my thumb too early. So, I was "dropping" the ball and putting a spin on it. I got rid of the Cobra and bought a Master Wrister and after about 10 games or so, I stared getting comfortable with it. I changed wrist positions and released the ball a lot of different ways, but the track remained the same. I used to drop the ball sometimes in front of the foul line and now I'm getting the ball a few feet over the foul line. I am putting a lot more revs on the ball, I see a stronger roll and increased pin action but the track stays the same. On the longer patterns I had trouble with, I'm scoring better and have better ball reaction, but the track is still the same. I just think it's weird. If I can, I'll go to the Track seminar at Clint's place in October and maybe Del or Clint can shed a little light on what I'm doing.

Saltsburg, about 29 miles NE of Pittsburgh. I think I'm less than 2 hours from you too. Maybe I need to take a couple of road trips to Ohio.
