Where do we start?
« on: October 28, 2008, 05:40:17 AM »
Okay guys, now that I see there are still some around who would like to discuss bowling in general and/or improve, let's get this going.

I'd like to discuss the following:

1) type of shot you've been on or encountering...
2) ball/layout and cover you've been using...
3) are you satisfied with your current scores/results?

I'm bowling 2 leagues this year where I'm seeing a tremendous amount of over/under aka wet/dry or blk and wht condition.  This shot plays much tougher to tweeners who are rev dominant as a cranker can get dead left and hit the dry 48+ feet down lane to break into the pocket and the stroker doesn't get too much of a violent reaction from the friction due to their lower rev rate.

I've been using 2 balls,  1)old Exception 5.0 (6x4mb, pin 1 7/8 above mid line with the pin under middle finger, ball is 4k high polish). 2) an old D2Z (2x1cg, pin and cg is on val 3.25 above mid line, ball is also 4k polish) I came up with this as a variation of the Leong-Hall layout which was also designed for playing wet/dry conditions.  This layout actually works very well on this.

I've been scoring much higher then usual on this shot compared to past years as I've learned to go much straighter with a broken wrist release instead of trying to circle the ball and cover the entire lane.

I'm interested in hearing how you guys handle this condition, thanks.

My home house got a new machine and this has been the reaction all season. I am 212 in that house and 225 in the more walled up house.

In the over/under house I have been using the Complete NV (OOB) and the Uprising (1000 polished) playing 15 to 8. Outside of 8 could be washout or through the face. Depends on how far down the lane you get outside.

The other line I play is deep inside with the Tantrum. I get in and hit 23 at the arrows out to 10 and back with a soft hand.

I have had to play these two completely different lines in the course of a 3 game set. No one is tearing up what used to be a very high scoring house this year. I am actually having fun.

Ogre solid 4 1/4 x 4 pin down at 1k abralon no polish is one of the balls i use for this type of shot, the low diff and solid cover make control much easier. Also a slightly shined on box Cell with a 4 inch pin with mb in the 80 degree area, i throw at 18 or so mph so my speed is slightly dominant over my rev rate.

The Cell usually last 12-14 frames before the heads blow out from too many righties, so then a old Hotwire or something with a mild cover and core is the right choice.

Btw nice to see you back hope it is a full time thing, you are truly a nice guy unlike me hahaha

It is a shame that Rick is back as I'm on my way out.

Anyway, since I've moved into this new area I've learned that they like to lay down a long shot(44-47 ft).  There is no wall to bounce off of, which has made me tighten my line quite a bit and not cross as many boards as I would like.

Ball wise, I have 8 that I cycle through every other week ranging from 1k to 4k/polish finish with various layouts.  Whether I'm at 10 with my Equation(weakest)or 32 with my modified Rising(strongest) as long as it doesn't stray past 5 at the breakpoint it's looking good.

I'm satisfied, yet unsatisfied with my scores so far this season.  My strike count is way up(roughly 7 strikes a game, alot of the time 4/5 baggers).  Yet my spare game is horrible.  I'm just over 50% so far-which irritates me because before I hurt my wrist in '07 I was a great spare shooter.  If I can get my spare game back and keep my strike game the same or better, there will be no reason I can't attain my goal for the season(225+, at 221 and 214 right now).

But I'll end this on a high.  I've gotten 2 more honor scores this year and some pretty strong 700s(790, 774, 767, and 744).  Not the best ever, but very pleased considering I couldn't even pick up a ball not even a year ago.

This is my third straight year in a mixed league and the pattern is a normal THS (about 39ft.) but this year with very clean backends. Last year there was just too much carrydown from the league the night before everyone struggled the first several months. This year the pattern has been very good to the strokers and alot more high scores so far but it does seem abit shorter in length but that could be just me.

My current ball has been the Power Machine at 4000 abralon with polished. Pin is 5 1/2" from PAP (pin above bridge) and MB next to thumbhole.

As far as scores, I've been very satisfied with my games. Though I tend to struggle with the PM on the first game the ball is abit squirty on fresh oil. But I do come back very strong on the other two once I start playing the 15 and 18 board to 6 once the lanes open up. I tried something different the past two series and used the Power Machine without switching balls all games and shot 697 and 752 (290 in the second game with 11 strikes in a row).

The PBA Experience league I did over the summer did help me alot with adjusting to lane change and being more consistent and disciplined with my accuracy. I'm almost 10 pins over my average from last year so it's done alot of good. I hope to have my Kinetic Energy possibly tomorrow to use it for the first time for league tomorrow night.

Thanks for the feedback...hmmm, interesting.  It seems most prefer to play the line vs the friction.  My only problem with that shot is if I tug it too much, the ball will deflect and ping a corner pin.

I started to take the other approach (move outside) which is how I get whacked out here by bowlers who can pipe the dry "and" have the carry.

X, what's going on bro?

Mr bowlingnut, pm sent.

Oh, one more thought...I chose a 12-13 yr old ball (D2Z = Danger Zone 2) because each ball is made/produced to handle the oil thickness of its time so oil densities were not as thick back then as they are today.

Just a thought for you guys that if you want a weaker ball these days to handle drier conditions, you can possibly look at older pieces as their design and covers are not necessarily as strong as balls produced today.

rick, for the wet/dry shots, i tend to use particle pearls, it gives me the slower response off the dry, but it rolls in the oil that way if u pull it, it rolls through the deck instead of deflecting.

Rick,

The shot on our lanes this year are a little different then last year.  They are still a normal house shot type with dry on the outside.  But the interior is oiled heavier than in the past.  So if I hit the dry with my Rising, it comes back alot and almost brooklyn during practice, so I have to stay in the middle a bit more, but the Rising still bites with the oil.  I am still getting used to my Uprising (both rising and up are drilled with number 1 drilling) it gives me more length, but does not handle the oil as well, it needs dry.  Im still experimenting but it is coming along.  The PBA Ex league this summer has helped, and I look forward to bowling better in Vegas in May.

I like surface and forward roll. Accuracy is important to.... "If I tug it I ping a corner"... Come on Rick, you know if you tug it you don't deserve to strike anyway!

As the old line goes, I only need 3 boards to score but they all have arrows on them!

Seriously, to help explain some, my definition of tug is 1-2 boards, a pull is 4-5 and a "yank" is "what the heck"!..

On an average, I'd have to say that 8-9 out of 10 people will tug a ball before they trust it and send it right.  Hence, how your typical wear and tear of lanes occur.

Neat little fact, if you looked at an old wooden lane, you should see the boards approximately from 8 board on the right all the way to about 10 board on the left worn out to where it can be almost black compared to the outside boards on that same lane.  Boards 1+2 will most likely be a nice clean brown almost to when the lane was brand new.  The simple reasoning for this is that we know we should hit the headpin to throw a strike (not always necessary on a backdoor strike) so we will typically try and guide the ball to some degree towards the headpin and also how 10 board (second arrow) became known as the "track" due to the physical wear and tear of the wood.  Since hard rubber did not offer us much hook, lanes were worn down in this manner.

We never learned the "track" from 1st arrow probably cause 10 was safer to roll a ball (away from the gutter) and 3rd arrow didn't offer anough entry angle.  This is just my assumption..

Rick, I don't miss what I am looking at ever....because I close my eyes!
Seriously, I have been running into this issue with PBA patterns but opposite of the house shot. I get it 1-2 right and get wiggle and leave 2-8-10 and get it in and it goes high. To combat this, I have increased my ball speed, decreased my rev rate slightly, and am staying behind the ball much more. This is necessary for me on the A22 machine they use for regionals and the new patterns that are used for this machine. They play tighter down lane and I got wiggle and no midlane read hooking it because I didn't have the rev rate to get it off the pattern strong enough and squaring up, the ball would duck hook off the pattern. The guys being successful were high rev high tilt guys and up the back guys with some speed. I am finding that this ball roll also helps me blend out the house shots as well. We don't get the huge black/white type house shot. Outside 8 just doesn't hook but the track area is very defined and the backends are marginal so you have to filter it to the track just right. There is some margin for error again, with the tighter back end, the rev dominant spinner can't get the ball to respond quick enough with launch angles inside 20. Now I can play straighter, the ball starts its hook motion sooner, has a heavier roll and the entry angle is better.
