GPS two questions
« on: February 08, 2005, 05:50:37 AM »
I have an Ultimate Inferno.  How does this ball compare to that ball?  I.E. length, hook, snap, etc.

Also, if I order one online, what should I ask for (I.E. what's a good pin, top weight, etc.)

thx in advance,
V

Hey kc,

The GP2 is about 6-10 boards stronger depending upon your style.  I'm speaking in terms for a med rev, med speed player.  What style of game do you consider yourself to have (stroker, tweener, cranker)?  Also what reaction are you looking for?  This will help us decide what specs to recommend for you, thanks.

Hey Rick,

GP2 with 4" pin 3 ounces TW - 15lb 3oz overall

Don't really own any heavy oil equipment (here in NY, I rarely see 'floods').

BTW, taking the Freakazoid to be drilled tomorrow.  thinking about bringing the GP2 as well.  You find that knife yet?

I stand 25-30, and try to throw 15 to 5 ish.  Not a huge hook.  I tend to come over the ball a bit.

The Inferno seems to hook, but when I hit oil, I'll leave some half pocket tens, or flag the head pin.

thx,
V

Okay kc,

I'd suggest getting a pin 3-4 top around 3.  This is so we can place the pin above finger area for some length, the GP2 is a really strong ball.  If you can, get hold of your PAP (positive axis point) also from your driller, another very useful piece of info to help us help you.  Thanks...

Have you tried a lower grit on the UI yet?  It's box finish is 800-grit, if you haven't tried anything lower, give 600-grit or even 400-grit a try, it might save you from spending a lot on a new ball.  If you do decide on a new ball, the GP2 will give you that little extra 'umph' that you need on weak pocket shots, or to just kick out those 10's!

As for pin placement, go with 2-3 or 3-4.  I find 2-3 better for pin below fingers layouts, and 3-4 for pin above the fingers layouts.  Top weight, anything in the middle of the range should do, like 2oz-4oz.  I prefer buying from my driller because I end up only saving around $30-$40 from buying online (or elsewhere), and I find that my driller is more friendly and more often gives discounts, free thumb/fingerhole adjustments, coaching advise, etc.

good stuff, thx guys...

I haven't had a Track since a Red Alert.  Hopefully, the GPS will go further than the UI.

It will go quite a lot further than both the UI and GP2, and it will have amazing backend on medium-oil conditions.  It's not quite in the same oil-handling league as the UI or GP2.  It shines on medium with clean backends.  It might not be what you want/need for heavy-oil though as it's a pearlized ball.  The Rule (not GP2) is another great choice for a medium to medium/heavy oil condition.

Hey kc,

Icetink is correct on the description of the Xception.  It is designed to handle med to med lite conditions.  It will hook less compared to your UI.  The GP2 is the better way to go based on what you're describing.

Just to clarify, the Red Alert is from Bruns.  I believe you meant the Code Red..no biggie.

One last note, the word "better" isn't really a good word to use in regards to bowling equipment.  One ball is typically not "better" then another, they simply serve different purposes to match a surface condition to produce a desired reaction for that bowler.  Can we say a football player's 1 inch cleat is "better" then his 1/4 inch cleat?  Ans: No...the 2 shoes simply help serve a specific purpose in creating a desired amount of friction to the field condition for that player.  Hope this helps explain some...
