How is your GP2 Drilled? SUGGESTIONS?
« on: March 22, 2005, 08:52:22 AM »
Hey everyone,

Just spoke to Rick last night regarding laying out a GP2 for me.
I'm contemplating on getting this ball for Heavy Oil Patterns. I do not have a Heavy oil ball in my arsenal right now and thought that the GP2 would fit the bill. I was also curious to know how your GP2's are dilled and what type of reaction you got out of the ball on Heavy Oil (You can comment on other conditions too). Also, have you altered the surface on the ball? I like the way Achappy's ball Arc's off the dry and doesn't "Hockey Stick," hook off the dirt.

Here's my profile
Style = Power Tweener
Axis Tilt = 0-13 degrees
Track = High Track (1/4" inch next middle finger and over edge of thumb on track side)
Rev Rate = 325-400
Speed = 15.5-16.5mph
PAP = 5 1/2 over and 3/4" up
More in my profile...

I was looking at the High Track Layout suggestions on the GP2 drill sheet and thought that Pin under the ring and MB almost on VAL. I'd like this ball to rev-up early (Forward Roll kind of look) and finish without "Flipping," off the dry, but even arcing strong and driving. I've had too many balls drilled up Stacked Leverage in the past that have been to "Jumpy." when it touched the dry boards.

Here's an example of a layout that is "Jumpy," or has a "Hockey Stick Type Shape Hook Look," when it bounces of the dry for me...

---------------
---------------
---O---O-P-----
---------------
---------------
---------CG----V
-----0---------
---------------
---------------
---------MB----

P =Pin
V = VAL
MB = Mass Bias

I thought a heavier roll without the "Flip" might fit the bill. A heavy oil ball that could read the pattern, yet be controllable and strong on the backend.

Potential Forward Roll Type GP2 Layout would look like this one below...

---------------
---------------
---O---O-------
-------P-------
---------------
--------------V
-----0---------
---------------
---------------
------------MB-

P =Pin
V = VAL
MB = Mass Bias

Thanks for all the help!

Agreed. I have 90% of my 30+ balls drilled pin under ring, cg palm, mass bias left of thumb in the track. This gives me very good control and an even reaction down the lane. I track very high as well, and my speed is upper 17-lower 18 MPH. When I drilled my 1st GP2 with essentially the same drill as you are suggesting above, it was very early rolling, which sounds like what you want.

Ramtart,

The layout you have listed should work well. For heavy oil I like leverage drillings, however---I have a GP2 drilled up with the pin below the bridge and MB on VAL....I get heavy early roll and a strong continuous arc. I can use this on heavy oil as well as league shots. FOR ME it is not the best ball on league conditions because it is so strong, but if I had to I could make do.

Guys,

This is great information. Right now I don't have anything set up for Heavy. I have an Eraser set up in a 4 x 2 type of drilling and that rolls pretty heavy for me without the hockey type shape flip. The only thing is, the Eraser can't handle heavy.

I have an Excel Particle for Medium-Heavy patterns set up with pin just under bridge and MB about 1 1/2 inches to the right of thumb (In between thumb hole & VAL = 75 degree position). This ball can handle heavy in OOB condition, but is too "Flippy." for me.

I'm excited to see what kind of look this GP2 gets!
Keep the ideas coming guys and I'll keep you updated!

Ramil,

I think the 4inch pin from PAP, about 1 3/4 inch above the midline and MB on your VAL would work well also.

-EX-,

Thanks for the reply man. I'm at work right now and I am looking at the drill sheet that I just printed out (don't tell anyone at work I wasted 2 pieces of paper...hehe). 4" from pap would produce the earliest breakpoint possible.

Hmmm, that suggestion helps out alot! When I spoke to Rick, he mentioned that many of our local tournaments don't necessarily lay out the "Floods." From what I have experienced during the past 7 months, this seems to be true. Our house occassionally surprises us on league night with a very flat oil shot. The past 5 tournaments I bowled in, I would say that the GP2 would've helped me out in 2 of them. I think the GP2 will fill a nice "True Oil Ball," void in my arsenal.

Thanks guys!

Ramtart,

One thing I can say with total confidence is that if Rick knows your game, trust his suggestion. He may be little, but he is full of knowledge (and poop ).
