Decisions decisions!!!!
« on: July 11, 2003, 09:34:52 AM »
OK, here is the situation. I absolutely love my Thrash. One the oil starts moving down the lane though I cannot use it. I am afraid to alter the coverstock, because it works so well with that surface on the ball. Who knows, maybe I would like it more with a little of the shine taken off. I am just not sure if I want to risk it.

Has anyone else had a ball where this was the position you were in?

Ok, now you two are confusing the crap out of me. and right now Track ball's usages do confuse me, which doesn't often happen.

The Thrash and the Threat do not have huge differences in their core specs; in fact; they are miniscule. The covers are the major difference with the Threat being highly polished and the Thrash being 1000 grit matte (not dull but not polished). EVen Track's own numbers indicate the Thrash rolls earlier and hooks more at the backend. WIth the matte finish of a particle pearl, it has to, in theory, handle significantly more carrydown, than the Threat.

On the basis of this *apparent* analysis I'd say the THreat was for medium to medium-light oil patterns, while the Thrash *SHOULD* be able to handle medium to medium-heavy oil. Yet you two, Excaliber and tomtom have them reversed. I know Excaliber has a fairly high delivery speed, which may explain his problem.

Excal, you might try a liquid treatment like Ebonite's quicksand (a 1200 grit smoother) or Track's Clean and SMooth (just read abu tthis one) or even a gentle touch up with a Scotch Brite blue pad (800) or light grey pad (1000), but just enough to crack the shell a little more. I don;t think a full sanding with either is warranted.

EXCALIBER,

I would definitely go to another ball.  If there is one thing I have heard ALOT over the past years, it is people saying, "I wish I would have left the ball alone.  I can't get the same reaction I did last week."  If a ball works well with a particular surface, DON'T CHANGE IT!  For one, tht is why there are so many differents makes and types of balls on the market.  Secondly, it is hard to duplicate reactions in most balls.  Just ask anyone who had the original X-Factor.  Out of the box, the ball was a monster.  Once they tried to alter the surface, almost everyone complained that once they polished it back up again, the backend reaction was almost nothing.  So, if you are happy with a reaction out of a ball, I would advise to leave it alone.  Go to something else if you want a different look.

I agree with TWOHAND, too many times have I altered a ball's coverstock and when trying to restore the finish and reaction, it just wasnt there. If you like a ball the way it is, dont change it. As for the carry down problem, buy another and scuff it or wait til something else comes out like the Triple Threat!!

charlest, I did not mention a thing about the Threat.

My question was if I like a ball, but it does not work on the carry down like I would hope, should I adjust the surface, or just go to another ball?

So far, I have just gone to another ball. It has worked well.

charlest....also, I am not sure about anyone else's, but my Thrash seemed much closer to 1200. Maybe I should take it o 1000 grit compound (as it is listed) and see what I get.

No, the next poster, tomtom, did.

Excal,

I thought you wanted to change the surface.
If a ball is working well for you, and is doing what it is supposed to do well, I never recommend changing the surface. If someone wants to, then I'll make my best educated guess as to the most appropriate change. Lately several people have asked similar questions and based on what they say, I strongly recommend they do not alter the surface. (After all, if a ball works for the condition for which you bought it, keep it; that doesn't happen often enough.) However, many of these people should never have asked this question as they had already made up their mind. All they wanted was someone to agree with them.

For my money, If a ball works, DO NOT CHANGE it. If you encounter a new condition and your ball does not work with line changes, hand and release and speed changes, then get a ball which does work. If you know enough and try enough other balls that don't work, you have an idea of the type of ball that would work and what kind of surface is needed.

A possible alternative:
However, if you know what surface your Thrash is right now, then you know how to get it back to it. THEN AND ONLY THEN, you can modify it to see if it will work on this new condition. If it works, get a new Thrash, set the surface to one that works (maybe with a slightly modified drilling) and then restore the original Thrash to the original surface.

OR get a new stronger ball (Maybe an EZ Money or a Freak, if you like Track?).

Excaliber....I would not under any circumstances alter the ball if you are happy with it's reaction on a given shot.

You either need to move or get a different ball.

Now if you are a Track hound, I have a pir of used balls here that would potentially work well for you. I have in 15# used a SuperFreak and a Freak. Both balls have been fully plugged and I will be doing a light resurface on the Freak soon.

If interested drop me an email and we can discuss pricing.

Let me dive into this and be a little more specific. The Thrash works great on the condition I wanted it for. But there is one MAJOR problem. I have several balls, mutant, superfreak, freakout, thing, icon, and a voo doo(these are what is in the bag right now), and all of them are dilled with the span I used before.

I went to a drilling seminar last month and Mike Riggins gave me a grip analysis, and shortened my span by 1/4 inch and we chaged the pitch in the thumb and fingers. Those other balls, except the mutant (I had the thumb moved) have the old spand and old pitches. MY FINGERS are feeling it. The Thrash is the only ball that fits me perfectly.

I also have another problem, psychologically I hate having plugged bowling balls. I have not really had a ball thrown that had plug in it for a long time. I know that to get it right I have to get the spans and pitches right in all of the balls.

charlest, if you remember I was asking about drill suggestions for the DZ2 carbide, this is the reason. BUT there is a problem there too. I will have my pro shop up and running in about 2 weeks, and do not really want to spend the money to have someone else do it for me.

Thanks for reading this stuff.
