Don't stray from what you have NATURALLY
« on: January 26, 2006, 04:34:41 AM »
This is another addition in the line of "tips", "observations" etc....from myself and tenpinspro.

As a bowler you have particular things you do correctly....or do well. Stay with those aspects of your game and just improve on them further. Once again I am going to mention my coaching a highschool team: kids always want to hook the ball more, cover more boards, rip the cover off of the ball.

If you are a natural "stroker" build on that. Take measures to improve your accuracy, or your spare shooting. Hooking the ball is fun to watch, and it gives a devastating strike ball...........but it can also mean "SPLIT CITY".

Same goes for super crankers. Many times you hear people trying to turn a cranker into something he is not....a stroker. "You need to play straight". Granted it is a good thing to be able to play several different areas of the lane, but why change someone so drastically when hooking the lane just came natural to them?

Primarily is refers to people that play the lanes relatively straight and decide they need to hook the ball more. It usually ends up adding bad habits to their fundamentals. Bad habits that can end up taking a very long to work out of their game.

So everything goes back to the start of this thread. You have a release that is natural to you. Stay with it. You have an area of the lane that is natural for you play, stay with it! Improve on what you already have. It will help your game in the long run!

Ex, that is a great tip. That is similar to what was told to me when I was looking for a coach. Alot of people said do not pursue coaching from someone who will change your whole game, but rather seek someone who will improve the attributes you already have.

Building from scratch can be more difficult than building off of a foundation that is already present.

You see this guy carl he knows what he is talking about. He did this with me and he did help me get more consistant with my hook shot. He then helped me learn to play straight after i asked him to. So if you are looking for a coach and are ever in northeast ohio go see carl. I will probly be there eather working in the pro shop or on the lanes working on stuff myself.
lol right carl. Im the one who works on the spinner, right. using up all the clean n dull, clean n tacky, magic shine.
lol!!!

Take baby steps rather then leaps of faith when you want to learn or fix somthing in your game.

I worked up this little spiel when I set up my profile:

Bowling Philosophy: Play your Natural Game. Use small adjustments, when necessary, to achieve adaptive Par+ Bowling. Be adaptive within the limits of your game.
Know thy Game.

I try to follow it.  I believe it. Agreed.

Very good reminder tag team partner.  Ex and I have discussed and preach this as well to our students/customers.  I call it staying within our "A" game or "comfort" zone.  It is very true that once we try to exceed our personal limits in speed, lift or anything that takes us out of our personal boundaries, it becomes very difficult for us to repeat or let alone execute something beyond our means.

My analogy for this is the milk bottle carnival game.  They give you a bean bag to knock down 3 heavy milk bottles.  I can hit the bottles with the bag if I don't throw it hard but the bottles won't fall over so I have to throw it harder and harder.  By the time I'm done, I've hit the floor, bottom of the milk crate they sit on or basically everything else but the bottles.  This is a perfect example of using too much muscle or force behind what we do and how we "WILL" lose accuracy when trying to do so.  So remember, do what YOU'RE good at and not what someone else can do and your scores will prevail in the long run.
