I think I need a Desert Heat
« on: September 12, 2005, 06:44:46 PM »
The last 2 weeks in my monday night league have exposed my lack of a good dry lane ball.  It is a 37' house shot with Guardian.  Problem is, it plays almost like a reverse block.  The people that score play 5-10 and have very little hand.  If I try to play that line, even with a ton of speed, I hit brooklyn.  So I move in like I should, but the shot is so inconsistent.  If you don't get the ball right of 10 at 45 feet, you go through the nose.  Anything farther right than 7 results in something ugly.  I CAN score playing inside on this shot, but it's just super touchy and I know there's a better way.  I took out my Slate Blue Gargoyle and that was reading far too early, and then died on the back.  I think a Desert Heat may allow me to move closer to the track and play where the fluffers do.  It also wouldn't read the dry so da*m early so I'm not forcing the ball to the breakpoint.  Do you guys think it would fit?  My weakest ball besides the SBG is an Xception (yeah I know).

Hey Don,

You mention a reverse block, how dry is the inside(15-20)?

I can't give you a number of units, because I do not know.  There is adequate head oil, but the balls read very early in the mids, probably about 32'.  It plays a lot shorter than 37'.  I could move farther inside and firm up my speed a tad, but I lack enough tilt to make the ball recover.  The best line I had was with my 5.0.  Lay down at 30, cross arrows at 19 with very firm speed.  Problem with that is that anything farther left than that and I was through the nose.  If I moved inside farther to get the ball down the lane, I couldn't make it recover quite enough.  I switched to my Epic and that read the lane far too early to be of any use.  When I was able to get it to the hole, it had already bled too much energy and I left a few soft 10's before I bagged it.

Hey Don,

I can picture what you're saying cause my house used to be Guardian (1st PBA stop in the 80's)....or remnants of it since they were never treated properly, they just cracked all over the place...horrible site.

Okay, the Desert would be a decent choice for that because it will help you create some natural length but it is also your lower tilt that makes the ball roll up "and" not let you recover as strong.  I'm thinking about pushing the pin way out to help promote the most amount of length yet allow you to still finish.  Something like a 5x4.5 cg, to send you down long bud.....and the lane should be able to guide you back in.  How's that sound?

Sounds great Rick.  When I get one I'll let you know how it turns out.  This is one of those times where you want to "let the lane do the work".
