Title: Freak Out vs. Rule
Post by: xwenhan on October 31, 2005, 10:24:02 PM
Which one will allow me to open up the lane more easily? I stand at around 25 and throw out to about 10. Pattern : 37 foot medium oil synthetic lanes.
Thanks

PS. Any Videos ??? (For the Freak out)

If the backends are clean, both balls will open up the lane for you. However, by the natural characteristics of the coverstocks, the Rule will start up a bit earlier whereas the Freak Out will be more angular on the backend. Both are great balls, but I feel if the pattern is medium oil, the Freak Out would be a better choice because you will be able to use it longer whereas with the Rule, once the lanes start to transition, this ball will grab the dry too early and react too early or burn up completely.

Your other option with the Rule would be to polish it. So, if you dont mind doing some coverstock prep, polish up the Rule.

A polished Rule will be very close to the Freak Out. The particle in the Freak Out makes it want to start up while the reactive Goo makes the Rule want to pusha more than particle....so one offsets the other. I do believe in my opinion the Rule has a stronger core and will give you a stronger move....polished, the Rule will get through the heads very easy. One caution: once I polished a few of my Rules, they really disliked oil...

I polished my Rule a couple times with Back Magic. It definately handles less oil when shined up; it tended to slide thru the BP. I had polished it to try and fill a gap. Now that I've filled the gap, I have it back to 600 dull. It has no problem with oil with that surface.
I played down the 5 board or so with it polished, and it made a nice strong move on the back to the pocket. Dull, it prefers a much tighter line inside, say 17 out to 10. If I get it too far outside and it sees dry, it will grab and usually come in thru the nose.
