Oily outlines???
« on: July 17, 2006, 05:02:45 PM »
Hello everyone,

A bowling centre that I recently visited had VERY oily outlines (down to 41ft). Because of lack of experience with different lane conditions (I usually bowl to a centre that has 37ft tree pattern) I had a very difficult time to play to this centre. My ball (Machine) just didn't want to move right (I am a lefty) and I moved to 14 throwing 10 (I usually stand at 18 throwing between
8-11).

What is your oppinion guys? first of all, I studied the PBA patterns and I didn't see such a strange pattern. I think that the machine that oils the lanes has a problem.

Please give a feedback about this.

Thank you track for your great products!

Mike; You need to flatten out your hand and use more forward roll on the ball when you hit oilier patterns. Here in Pa. on oilier patterns, the lefty's usually move to the gutter and use lots of roll in their release. You need to use a straighter line thru the heads and not swing the ball very much,if at all! Also, your Machine may not be aggressive enough in it's stock finish for this condition, you may need to give it some more surface either with a scotchbrite pad or by sanding it. The condition could be a fluke or the lanes may be experimenting with a different pattern. With todays high friction balls, the lanes need to change patterns to help combat damage to the lanes! Hope this helps!

mike,

The machine can handle some oil.....but it is not meant for heavier oil, and if you hope to use it there you may need to sand it down a bit.

Also, what kind of layout does it have?

Carl,

I really don't understand much of layouts but the only thing I can say is that it goes long and hits strong.

On other lane conditions, a tree with 37feets oil and dry outlines, both on synthetic and wooden lanes, the machine works just fine. Even when the oil goes down to 41 feets.

What I heard about this particular bowling centre is that when a tournament took place over there and we had our best players, every one of them were complaining about the oil. My pro shop guy says that their machine really has a problem.

The fact is when I face such conditions, what can I do? I watched other players with MEGA revs playing there and their ball hooked just 2-3 boards. Isn't it strange?

Anyway, I am thinking of getting a Mean Machine which is for heavy oil and a smooth finish. By the way, what is the grit of the Mean Machine and the original Machine? For the original machine, I think that is 1500 polish.

You cannot overcome any pattern with a ball. It is the bowler's adjustments that can. A ball can be suitable for certain conditions, but you have to read the lane and ball reaction.

Tough sport patterns will sometimes not allow you to play your favorite line. I know from a house nearby who had a tournament pattern of more than 40' of oil PLUS long oil tongues next to the gutters up to 50' long. Not buffed, oiled. Anything that went outside of the 8th board was lost or would hit the 6 pin. The only way that worked on this was a down-and-in shot and/or a release with much forward roll, just like kreitz described.

Never make your bet on the ball. Win the game in your mind and adjust with everything you have.
