Title: Help please, how to drill my new Track balls
Post by: Amoyensis on August 07, 2018, 07:26:21 AM
Hi all,

I am playing bowling now for over 1 year with a kind of talent. I started with 14 lbs and I'm going up to 15 right now. Buildung a complete new inventory under the ebonite umbrella.

I start playing league now and I bought a Paradox Black and a Tundra. My problem now is, that I don't know, which layouts I should choose.
The Tundra should be for dry or short lanes, the Paradox basically for medium to high. A columbia 300 eruption pro blue will join the two soon ( as performance ball maybe).

So should I choose the short layout for the Tundra? Or would the combination of "short layout +  a ball made for dry patterns" be too much? What should I use for the Paradox Black?
Someone told me, I should use one layout in all balls to learn the different reactions of them. But what would be a layout to use in both (or all three of them)?
I also wrote to track support once, but never got an answer.

My style is tweener with medium speed ( ~16 mph) and low-medium revs.

Thanks in advance!

Do you have any good pro shops in your area?  Perhaps ask some of the other people you bowl with who they trust.  I could throw out some generic layout like 4x4x2 that works well for most people (what I find myself using more and more, with stats not that much different than your own) but your PSO is a professional at watching you bowl and getting you exactly what you need.  Also as a newer bowler especially with lower revs its far too easy to stress out too much about layouts.  Ball surface is much more impactful to ball reaction and layouts are more a fine tuning thing.  In fact with symmetric core balls (all you mentioned but your Paradox) the only thing that really matters is the pin to pap distance in my opinion.

BowlingForDonuts gave some good advise.  Always talk to your local driller who can watch you bowl and give you feedback based on that.  Layouts are not as important as surface (and surface can be adjusted by the bowler).

A new bowler has many more variables in their game that will affect the ball motion more than the layout.  Variances in ball speed, hand release, ball trajectory (launch angle), rev rate, approach direction (drifting), etc.

Good Pro shop operator is who you need to see.
Ball motion is influenced most by the ball surface - (50%)
Pin-pap distance - 25%
core strength - 15%
layouts/tweaks - 10%

so don't sweat pin up or pin down, its pretty minor compared to the surface prep on your ball

I think what he means by short layout (I was questioning that before my first post) is Track's recommended symmetrical layouts have one for short oil patterns.

They call it Max Control in the above link.
