Title: Phenom vs. Super Freak
Post by: Rock77 on July 26, 2003, 02:43:58 AM
Ok, both of these balls are supposed to be able to handle "heavy" oil. With the obvious difference being that the Phenom is much more angular at its breakpoint, how do these balls differ?? I can see the coverstock is different, being that the FANG coverstock seems as it is a higher load and more aggressive particle coverstock. I am trying to justify getting a Phenom. I already have a Super Freak. Should I take the dive into getting a Phenom??

Rock,

From my conversation with Del and B Monce Thursday----plus my own experience with previous morpheous cores, I am going to have a Phenom.

Del and Bill said that the Phenom is longer than the Mutant and has a stronger angle of entry than the Freak.
What that tells me is this----The Mutant for me gets about 3-4 ft further than the SuperFreak----so the Phenom will get that extra length and a different look on the lanes than the Super Freak does.
The Phenom will cover oil, but is supposed to give you that sharper angle into the pocket that they Super Freak doesn't.

Phenom---I have to have it. FAR too interesting of a core for me to not own one.

It is a very interesting ball. It moved nicely on the video clips on the Track website. Although I wonder if they were actually throwing on the lane conditions the ball is made for!?! I am also beginning to wonder if the Super Freak was one of those "hold you over" pieces of equipment. You know, they release 3 very good balls and market them well (Freak, Freak Out, and Mutant) then they release the Super which I feel wasnt marketed as well as it could have been. It is a good ball!! I kinda feel as if Track released the Super to hold people over until the next big thing came out, which of course is the Phenom. I dunno, I will probably own one, this is just my take on things.

Rock,
I do not feel the Super Freak was a hold you over ball. I do believe that it was released at a bad time though. So close to the end of the season, same with the Crunch.
Both of these balls are great, but will not have the popularity of the others because more people were bowling when those were released.
Only the more serious bowlers are going to buy equipment that comes out during and before the summer. If the Super Freak was released in February, it would have been HUGE.

Good point, and you are probably right. Now I just have to decide that if I get a Phenom, do I get rid of the Super Freak??

Rock,

If I were you I would wait until you throw the Phenom before you get rid of the Super Freak. And if you like the Phenom, then you can get rid of the Super Freak. The cover on the SF is so easily adjusted though, you may want to try different surfaces before getting rid of it as well. Maybe it can fill a good void you have between your Threat----and the future Phenom.

goodluck

Yes, it will probably fill a void, but I also need a good medium ball. Debating on either a Thrash or Triple Threat!?! What do you think??

Rock, from what I have heard the triple threat is ideal for medium conditions. It is only a hair stronger than the Thrash---so they are close. I love my thrash.
BUT if you were to add the right amount of polish to the Superfreak, it could be like a Triple Threat with a stronger core. Remember, they have the same cover only the TT is pearl. So like I said, that ball can easily fill a void you will have.

Well, if I decide to keep the Super Freak, I will use that on heavy mediums. I would get a TT or Thrash to cover mediums and my Threat will cover med-light conditions. As I stated, its just a matter of what ball to get. You say the TT will be a bit stronger than the Thrash which means it will read the midlane more and prabably have more of an arc than skid/snap. Is the Thrash more of a skid/snap ball or does it arc evenly throughout the lane. I have been told it is just like a Threat with a bit more backend.

My Thrash arcs and does not react too hard off of the dry unless I hit it too hard.
If the Threat is med/light for you then you should probably the the Trash.

How do you think the Thrash and the TT will differ. It appears that the TT has the stronger core of the 2. Which would in turn give it more backend. Maybe I will try a Thrash.

Rock,

The TT core is the same as the Threat. The Thrash core is stronger with more flare potential. However, this difference is so small that you may only notice the difference in the coverstock.

And the Thrash uses the WOW II pearl right?? As opposed to the WOW II ultra on the TT??

Rock,
You are correct, the Thrash uses the WOW 2 pearl.

With my Thrash life just keeps getting better and better.
Lastnight I shot 234, 266, 256 (first 3---of 4 games are sanctioned) and the last being 279.
