Ball suggestion
« on: December 19, 2005, 06:09:49 AM »
Posted a while ago seeking advice about a ball that will let me play straighter and more outside due to iffy oil conditions, so I'll update here with a bit more information.

I'm a righty stroker/tweener, medium speed with about medium revs. Currently am using a Track Arsenal Reactive and a Columbia Super Beast (old, I know). Here are pics of the layouts:

Now, I'm fair at adjusting myself to make a ball work, but lately I feel like I'm fighting the conditions and the ball. I bowl in two leagues, one with med-heavy oil in the middle and a fairly dry outside, the other a second-shift on wood lanes, so a bit dry.

I'm attempting to replace the Super Beast soon. I'm looking for a step or two down from the Arsenal, as I'm not quite comfortable swinging it like I need to and am seeing over/under lately that makes it hard to control. I realize that one ball won't fit both of my league conditions, so I'm looking for the best comprimise, as well as something that will perform well in similar tournament conditions (building an arsenal slowly). The two balls that I keep looking at are the Solution Power Plus and the Solution Power Plus EX. I understand the basic differences from the website stats, but would like advice from those in the field on how they compare to and work with each other.

And hey, if anyone has another ball to suggest, let me know too.

Hey blackdog,

Based on your info, there are many of us who are encountering the same type of problem regarding conditions being over/under.  Due to the fact that most of us in the "tweener hell" category cannot throw the ball like a strong cranker (stand left and throw right), we are forced to play more down and in on these shots.

I'd suggest the Solution EX as a good step under the Super Beast.  It should allow you to go straighter and longer in the dry area in comparison.  Be careful with the purple Solution however, it is much stronger OOB then most would think.  I had to fine mine to 1200 and then apply a lite coat of Clean and Sheen for it to be now considered as more of a med type condition ball.  Let us know if we can be of more help to you...

Thanks for the suggestion, that's about where I was ending up on my own conclusion. Just wasn't sure if anyone had any additional input.

What about drillings? I've got to admit, this is probably the part of bowling where I have the least understanding. I can't really tell much by comparing the pic of my Arsenal Reactive to the drillsheet on the Track website, probably because my pin and CG are so close to each other. I know that all drillings get adjusted here and there to fit the bowler, but what would be a good starting point to match the conditions I've described?

Thanks again for all the help.

The layout on your AR is for getting your ball into an earlier roll.  This is good for heavier oil.  If you put the pin above the ring finger with the cg in the same spot the AR would go down the lane a little further before it made it's move.

If your looking for a ball to go under the AR then your wanting a ball for drier lanes than what the AR can be used for.  You could approach this in two ways.

First you can find a ball that has less oil grabbing ability and drill it the same as your AR.

Second you can find a ball that has less oil grabbing ability and drill it different for more length.  Such as the same cg placement but get one with a longer pin out distance so you can drill it with the pin above the ring.

I feel there are many balls that can fit under the AR that you would like.  The thing you need to ask yourself is what type of reaction are you looking for in the new ball?  Do you want a strong arc type ball or a ball that flips?  This will make your ball decision a lot easier.  Here are some choices.

To fit under the AR!

ANGULAR
XCEPTION
HEAT
SOLUTION PP EX.

These are not in any particular order.  I hope this helps bud.

That's a good question. Pretty much everything I've thrown has been a flip-type reaction, though the Super Beast comes closer to a strong arc. I'm not entirely sure of the advantages/disadvantages of each reaction type. I definitely want to tame things down from the reaction that I get with the AR though; the hard turn gets me into trouble if I'm slow to adjust to the conditions.

The Solution PP EX is pretty much what I've been looking at, though the Heat is something that I've considered before as well. I definitely want more length and less dramatic turn than the AR, but I don't want something that will keep sailing and never hit the pocket unless I move way outside.

If I drilled up the Solution PP EX the same as my AR, the ball itself should give me more length but still have a nice reaction and hitting power on the back end, yes? What would be the main difference between doing this and the same thing on a Heat? Or maybe placing the pin above the ring on the Heat? I'm thinking that placing the pin above the ring on the EX would be too much length for what I'll use it for.
