Concerns from a new bowler
« on: November 11, 2005, 05:58:35 AM »
I'm newbie who just recently (this summer) started to bowl again.  I'm finally learning how to hook the ball and carry a phenom unleashed and gp2.  I was wondering if any of you might have some input for me regarding a few things:

1.  Is it common to have mental blocks when switching or learning a new ball?  I just recently got my gp2 and in the past two weeks, I've lofted the ball 8 ft. in the air about three seperate times.  I can't seem to figure out if its a mental thing or a technique thing.  The ball is drilled the same (thanks to tenpinspro), but I just can't seem to get it out the same as I do w/ my unleashed.

2.  I think I've finally gotten comfortable w/ my release yesterday, but this morning, I woke up feeling like I somehow strained my wrist.  Should I be concerned with this?  I know, heard from people, that you're supposed to relax and almost have a "break" of the wrist right before you release the ball.. since I've never felt this "straining", could it be becuase of this technique and its a result of me just not use to bowling this way?

Any input would greatly be appreciated.

1. Yes
2. Yes

Anytime something hurts...you probably either used it too many times or did something it was not used to!

Regarding your difficulties in physically throwing your GP2 the same as your Unleased...just give it some time.  It's tough to throw a brand new ball with the feel that your old favorite gave you.  In 10-20 games, you won't even remember the troubles you're having right now.  Good luck with your new equipment!

I find out that when I get a new ball drilled up, I have to work the thumb slug in a bit. I can do this by beveling the edges of the thumb more and putting a peice of slid tape in the back of the thumb.

Hey, it might be slop but, it all looks the same on the scorecard!!!!!

nomad,

It is definately common to have "mental blocks" when you start switching equipment. Since you are just back fresh into the game, odds are you have to learn the equipment better. This will come with time and as you get better throwing the ball.

Without actually seeing your new technique it is difficult for me to say if it is the new way of throwing that is hurting or if you are doing something wrong. I will say this, if you are starting to break your wrist a bit during release you are probably using your finger more than you have in the past. This could cause some tightening in the wrist.

Goodluck,
Carl

Hey nomad,

Can you release it in the one-step approach I taught you?  If so, then you're most likely still muscling a bit.  Remember, we made some drastic changes to how "you" learned to bowl vs the style and technique we've been working on...come by the shop and we'll check it out.
