A question for the "Tag Team"
« on: August 23, 2006, 02:55:19 PM »
I've been working on my game all summer with my coach, whereas my approach was improved tremendously, my release is improving, and now we are working on my grip pressure. He recently changed my thumb slugs to fit snugger, since he got me out of bending my thumb in the hole (before they were too big). Now, to get out of the thumb, I must keep it relaxed, or it will hang up. It took a few tries, when i got it relaxed, my ball roll was more precise, especially in the backend. I know its going to take some serious effort to relax my hand, since I was so used to squeezing.

How long did it take those who used to squeeze to get the muscle memory to relax the hand, and what techniques or drills could you use in practice to speed up the process?

Well I am not a member of the tag team, but I to have fixed this in my game. To help me remember I started to leave a little jagged edge on the front of my thumb to where if I griped on the thumb or I used pressure at all , I get a little cut on my thumb. I know sounds funky but pain helps you remember something a little faster then normal. I know I remembered alot faster then when I didnt have it done to the ball.

How long?...Good question, it varies bud among all individuals and how much time you take to practice and trust the feel.  I try and make my customers/students snug up with tape until they can let the ball hang at their side, truly relax and not have to squeeze to hang on (similar to what Six said).

My rule of thumb, if you can get in, you can get out.

Buck,

There is a rather high number....I believe it is 1500 reps to make it "second" nature, however it will change bowler to bowler.

Hey Buck,

When I went to see Rick (Tenpinspro) last summer, I was death gripping the ball due to the messed up longer span on my bowling balls.  After Rick fixed them, I still couldn't get myself to stop gripping the thumb.  It's literally taken me a year to get to the point where I am now and trust a snug thumb hole.  I now know that even though it's snug, I'm still able to get out at the time of release.  Hopefully it won't take you this long to get to this point, but this is my experience anyway.
