Which cleaners to use??
« on: September 02, 2003, 04:22:17 PM »
Ok, I am currently throwing a Threat, Thrash and a Phenom. I assume the Phenom can be deep cleaned with Clean n' Smooth. What cleaner can be used on the Threat and Thrash? The Clean n' Smooth will dull up the coverstock due to the abrasives and I dont want that to happen. What cleaner will deep clean without altering the coverstock??

Try Track's own Clean & Dull. Remember Clean & Smooth is primarily a liquid sandpaper, not primarily a cleaner, although there is some cleaner in it. Clean & Dull is ONLY a deep cleaner. I'd suggest using Clean & Dull once a month or so, unless you're bowling on very heavy oil constantly. Then, once a week may be called for.

Any number of "plain" bowling-specific cleaners or household degreasers can be used for daily cleaning. I've kind of been leaning towards Storm's Proacta Clean as a daily or after bowling cleaner, while using a Micro-fiber type of towel while bowling.

Some people like Neo-Tac's Hook-It for deep cleaning. While I have it, I hesitate to use it without industrial strength rubber gloves. The stuff seems like toxic waste dump material and you cannot use it on polyester balls, as it virtually dissolves them. I've seen what it does to urethane and I'll never do that again either.

I lean towards Tracks Clean n Dull. It is the only cleaner I have used on the my Thrash and it works great. I use it every 10-15 games or so. I use a micro fiber towel when I bowl and when I am done I use simple green to clean it. Clean n Dull does not alter the coverstock. I used to use Neo Tac's Hookit alot, but then I got a bottle that took the shine off of the ball I was cleaning. I figured if it is not consistant bottle to bottle I do not want to use it. Clean n Dull works just as good, if not better.

charlest: LOL! I just gave my relatively new Deuce its first cleaning with Hook-It last night, so your comments are near and dear to my heart. I actually applied it last night without using gloves, and my hand/fingers were intact this morning.

The stuff is nasty, but I've yet to find another product that does as complete a job. As Hook-It dries and leaves a powdery residue, it literally sucks any lingering junk from the cover. It's certainly a product that should be considered for deep cleaning aggressive equipment.

I will have to agree with Charlest, but maybe it's coincidence, two of my pearl balls are looking alot duller now from use of Hook-It.  I used to clean all my equipment with Hook-it on a regular basis until I heard rumors it was similar to paint thinner.  Could that be why polyester and urethane dissolve from extensive use?  As of now I am using Ultimate Rejuvenator to clean my equipment, which works just as good.

P.S. I heard a rumor that the increased friction from Hook-it applications actually cause faster ball death, or something to that extent.  Whether or not it's true is a mystery to me, but I will refrain from using Hook-It or Renew-It until some clarifications are made on those.

What's the reason for using Hook-It on Pearl equipment? The intended purpose of pearl covers is to get the ball further down the lane to promote more of a 'skid/snap' reaction, so Hook-It kind of defeats the purpose. Renew-It is a much better choice for pearl and polyester covers (or anything you prefer to keep on the shinny side).

I've used Liquid Sandpaper, Hook-It and Renew-It for several years on all my stuff, and I've had nothing 'die' as a result. I'll use a ball for 300-400 games (maintaining it with Neo-Tac products), and then give it away so that I can justify getting a new toy

There is nothing wrong with being careful in choosing cleaning products, but don't get overly influenced with unsubstantiated rumors.

Steven,

Well I used the Hook-It on my pearl equipment because it IS a fabulous cleaner and takes a ton of dirt oil and grime off in one application.  Those were my sole reasons for using Hook-It on let's say my Crimson Executioner which is the only pearl I throw now.  That ball contrary to popular belief is far from skid snap, as I get a strong hard almost solid like arc from it.  I never expected any increased tack from the product except for use on my Super Carbide.

I understand what you're saying though, I'd never apply Hook-It to my Too hot, Blue Hot Flame, or Green Gargoyle.

As far as the Renew-it I use it on all of my lighter oil polished equipment, but I never knew it increased the grit level.

I guess you can say I'm being paranoid as to the death of any of my equipment.  I've went out of my way and spent TOO much money, so I'd like to be extra careful.
