Title: Which is more important, hook or score?
Post by: shipper50 on November 03, 2006, 12:25:56 AM
I have been reading this board and the Track section for a long time now, and I have come up with the conclusion that most bowlers of today would like or rather throw the big hook and not care about scoring.

If you had only one choice of being able to hook a ton or throw the ball that only hooks 5 boards but carry 215 average or more which would it be?

id rather throw a straight plastic shot and be able to average 250+ doing that rather than covering every board in the lane....im sure many would agree.

I'll take that tight line, be happy with it, and kick captain hook's candy arse.

SCORE! Think in terms of what kind of reaction the bowler is getting at the key breakpoint area of the lane condition.... NOT overall boards covered.
Amount of loft and speed for the power players or target angle of entry for the straighter up the boards players. The tighter the line...usually is better, with less inherent problems.

I could care less about hookin the ball. The only thing I care about it giving my team the best opportunity to win. If that means me playing 27 or playing up three I don't care. It's all about my team getting the win.

Well, many of us will say that we'd rather score, yet time and time again we see guys in leagues and at tourneys who obviously want to do nothing more than make the ball hook. Personally, I'm more impressed with solid spare shooting and good balance and fundamentals. Anybody can hook the ball, if they really want to. Show me a guy or gal who posts their follow through, hits their mark, and makes their spares. That's the bowler that I'll give props to.

I noticed more than one person said they would throw plastic straight and score. What if the shot calls for playing a hooking ball straight and scoring?

Just thought I would throw another curve in here. Get it?

At my house we have a couple guys that throw backups and average in the 180's and a couple no-thumbers that hook the lane and average in the 150's.

Bottom line - the guys that throw the backups will cash higher than those who hook the lane.

One of the guys who throws the backup actually is missing his index finger.  Pretty interesting to watch him, it actually looks like a left-handed hook.

Me, as a young bowler, before practiced for more hook, for more revs, for more ladies in the back watching me and talking "look at that guy how much revs he has"... But now as a smart young bowler, try to play straight up 10. board and now i don't have the ladies at the back but i have a pretty solid average around 210

thanks

I want to get the ball to come off the spot with enough energy to put ten in the pit. It does not matter to me how the lane needs to be played to do this as long as I can repeat it.

I dont see any award in the USBC book for MOST HOOK... Hmm, they all seem to revolve around score...

Am I Wrong?

If the did offer rings for hook, the could offer a ring with the number of boards you cover embedded in the top.

I want to hook the ball more.  That way the one time out of 1000 that there is actually oil on the lanes (none of this "check up at the arrows" house shot garbage), I will be able to get a ball to hit while all the straighties would repeatedly leave 5 pins, 7 pins, 10 pins, and the most dreaded of all weak shots, the 5, 7, 10!  At which point I laugh, tell them to take their girlish crap out of here and proceed to gloat for the remainder of the night.

With all the balls you have in your profile you have owned in your life time, I am sure you will find a HOOK there somewhere.

score, but nothing beats a strike by a deadly snap when covering 20 boards.

since i wanna be versatile, i do it both ways.

The idea is to knock pins down. I'd rather throw a piece of bone down the lane and average over 200 then throw a diamond and average 150. Beauty is vastly overrated in bowling! Most important is that my team wins. If I bowl poorly and we win...great. If I bowl well and we lose...that's not good.

I'd rather throw a plastic ball straight down the lane and have good scores over throwing a big hook.  Pretty obvious if you watch me bowl since most of th3e time I play a down and in shot.  If I wanted a big hook I could just 2 finger that ball and hook the entire lane.

I don't care how much a ball hooks.  It's more about where it hooks and how I can score.

This is why i'm always saying that all balls now a days work great on blocked house shots.  The difficult lane conditons that are not blocked show how good a ball really is.  Not all balls work great on tough patterns.

Just because you can hook it on a shot doesnt mean you wont leave something funky. He|| on the a sport shot 2 weeks ago I had a ball hook up into the pocket and leave me the sour apple. Also carl I do think about it every night, I try both lines in practice and then deside whitch one looked to carry best. As of late you cant do much when I let the ball go and at the arrows my desert heat is wanting to turn left (refrance to tuesday).

I agree with this statement. I am a low speed higher rev player. If I usually get stuck playing with down and in bowlers, I will adjust my game accordingly and play deep to bump off their lines. If I have a ton of crankers, I will play that line maybe for a game, but after that I adjust accordingly and stay more behind the ball and play up the outside.

I really don't care about hook. Some of the young people at my center like to palm the ball and not use a thumb to watch it hook. To each his own.

If my ball hooks enough to take out the 5 and 10 pin, I am happy. Some of the big hook players I know shoot sets like 279, 140, 258, or 300, 170, 220. A lot of them washout and leave stuff like the 2 8 10 because they either misjudge the break point or they get their feet too fast and the ball never hooks.

I know a guy that shot 120, 210,  and then 290. He shot 620. I shot three low 200 games and beat him for series. I would have liked the 11 in a row award like he got, but I would not want it with a 120 game in the mix.
--------------------

I shot a 128, 160, 290 set way back around 77 or so. I moved from the 10 board to the 4th arrow. Left a 5 pin on the first ball and then sheet as they say today.

You still wouldn't want a 11 in a row award? I have 4 of them, all 290's.

Last night, 197 average bowler, straight up 10 board player who usually is very consistent, good spare shooter and versatile was playing deep hooking the ball because lanes were pretty wide open:

142, 137, 278 (after moving right and adjusting speed) so yes score!

My teammate and my brother......

DOH!
