Would there be an overlap??
« on: May 07, 2003, 08:08:06 PM »
Ok, I am thinking of picking up a Threat but was wondering if it would overlap in my arsenal. Here is my current arsenal:

Heavy - Zone Pro Azure, 1" pin under ring finger, cg stacked below.
Med/Hvy - Freak, 4" pin right of ring finger, cg stacked in line with pin and MB.
Med w/carrydown - Mojo, 3" pin above ring finger, cg swung left.
Med/Fresh - Hex, 3" pin below and to the right of ring finger, cg swung way out.
Light - Spell, 3" pin to the right of ring finger, cg stacked below,
HIGHLY POLISHED!!!
Spare - White Dot.

As you can see I love Track equipment and will be replacing the Zone Pro with a Mutant. Now if I were to pick up a Threat, wouldnt that overlap with say the Hex/Mojo area?? I dont wanna get a ball I dont need!! Thanks

Yep.  It would given this lineup.

Thanks Term, I knew I could count on you. Hey, how do the Hex and Threat compare in reaction given the same specs, lane conditions and drill patterns. BTW, is the Mutant a good choice to replace the Azure or should I pursue a Super Freak??

I would agree that if just look at the ball line-up there would be a noticeable over-lap.  But considering the drilling that he has on the Mojo and the Hex he could get a totally different look on the lane with a Threat drilled up differently.  I would think that there are instances where mojo just starts to not get down the lanes enough and you are forced to move in and the ball won't recover enough.  Then if you switch to the Hex it isn't angular enough to recover.  I think a Threat drilled up with a more skid snap reaction and maybe a cover tweak might usefull.  But not knowing your game it's tough to say.

There is a slight overlap but I think the Threat would fit those conditions where the Hex isn't strong enough and the Mojo is too early. However, it all depends on the current layouts and surfaces of each (assuming box surface).  I have a similar lineup (Freak Out instead of Mojo) and the Threat fits perfectly in between the two.  Because it's resin, the Hex requires a more friction downlane and is not as readable as the Threat's WOW 2 pearl cover when the volume of oil increases.

WOW, thanks Anthony, that puts things in perspective. Hey, maybe you can help on this part. If I add a Mutant to the mix possibly to replace my Zone Pro Azure, I would have to sacrifice my Freak. I dont use the Freak as often as I would like to anyway, but would there be even more of a gap in my arsenal now. You should stick around here Anthony, a member of Track's amateur staff is a definite plus on this website, especially for a guy like me!!

The Azure is a very early, even rolling ball.  The Mutant, although very strong, is not as early as the Azure and is much stronger in the back.  There would be  overlap between the Mutant and the Freak however.  To create a distinctly different look, you could go with a slightly weaker pin (say 4.5-5"), put the MB closer to your VAL (vertial axis line) and knock it down to say 800 or 1000 grit.  I suggest a weaker pin because with the MB closer to the VAL (which causes it to lose axis rotation quicker thus rolling earlier), stronger core and surface may make it burn up too early so go with a longer pin to prevent too much flare.  The Mutant flares a ton!

P.S.  I post in spurts when I find the time to get online to really just browse.   Lately it's just to check email and that's it..
