Hey bowler,

In theory, if a bowler can hook the ball from 2nd arrow (10 board) into the pocket (17 board) by playing down and in, that bowler hooks a total of 7 boards.  If you now move in and swing it right 4 boards, it only has 3 boards of hook left to come back.  With all things being the same (lift, speed, rotation angle, tilt and friction) that bowler only has a total maximum capacity of hooking 7 boards.

Same as a pitcher who throws a 7 inch curveball into the strikezone.  If he throws it out right 4 inches, the baseball will only curve back 3 inches.

What happens in actuality is that the ball is expending some of it's energy when we force it away from it's intended direction (left to right for RH) so it can only come back so much.  Hope this helps explain some...

bowler,

I agree with Rick. Odds are that you will have to change hand positions, or adjust ball speeds or change balls.
