Poll for Track users:
« on: May 18, 2005, 05:46:59 AM »
I have posted on here several times that by next year, I will have drilled at least 6 GP2s for myself and have given the different drills and cover changes, etc. I feel the versatility of the cover is among, if not the best among strong particle covers that are currently on the market and the characteristics of the ball in general suit my game perfectly.  I feel I can cover everything but the driest of dry, which is when I would pull out a plastic ball. Here is my question. If you could drill up a whole arsenal of balls for yourself, but you could only choose 1 ball to do this with, which ball from the current Track line would it be and why? This could be an arsenal of just 2, 4, 6 or however many balls you like to carry or would like to carry. While more than likely none of you would do this, I would like to see your feelings.

I look forward to reading all of your responses!

It is too difficult to pick one.....but if I had to, the Aggressive would fit nicely.

xception here, pearls react very well in my game, and i think with enough surface it would work decently on oil, which is where i perform best anyways. I'd rather have a ball that performs better on dry than oil.

WOW!!!!  I am surprised nobody mentioned the Havoc.  Good solid reactive would be my first choice.  The reason is that most solids are designed for oil in mind.  BUT....the great thing about solids is that with the right layout (pin 5-5 1/2 from PAP) and a good amount of polish, you can get the solid to react like a pearl.  Other balls that come to mind are the Phenom and Phenom Unleased (yes I know they are particle).  As far as current balls are concerned, I would have to say the XCeption.

Gotta give a vote to the original Freak. Have 3 of them and can cover every condition except the Sahara also. Could drill a fourth one negative and polish it to 2000 grit for this purpose.

I'd go with a Slash.  I haven't drilled up more than one of any ball from Track yet, but if I did, that would be the ball I would start with.

The Rule.

1.  600-grit - 4 x 3 pin below the fingers
2.  OOB surface - 4 1/2 x 4 pin below the fingers
3.  Decent coat of Magic Shine - 4 1/2 x 5 pin above the fingers
4.  Decent coat of Clean N' Polish - 6 x 6 pin above the fingers.

The coverstock being so strong can be manipulated to handle a variety of conditions.  Although the coverstock is very aggressive, drilling the ball with the pin negative and above the fingers should be able to create decent length.

I would choose the rule.  Being reactive it is a more versatile cover than particles.  Combined with the asymmetric core, only the two extremes would be difficult for the rule.

My problem with particles is their tendency to burn up and leave corner pins on shorter dryer patterns.  The rule can be polished and the asymmetric core can be positioned to produce skid resulting in stronger entry angles even on those short, dry patterns.

The rule's strong cover and asymmetric core also allows it to be set up for heavier oil patterns.  Just sand down to 320 and set the core to rev early.

My second choice would be the Slash for the same reasons that the strong reactive cover is more versatile than a strong particle cover.

My choice......

Phenom Unleashed

Surface was always so very tweakable and was always such a consistant ball. Always held power through the pin deck.

If I were to try to use one ball for anything, it would have to be a medium/strong reactive.  I would vote for the Rule.  The Slash might be a good choice as well, but I haven't thrown one.  If it were still available, I might go with the Havoc.  Unless you can throw 75+ degrees axis rotation, 20+ mph, put the pin near your track and polish the daylights out of it, I just don't see some of the strong particle balls being that versatile.  I haven't thrown a GP2, so I could be wrong, but I'd have to see it to believe it.
