Xception: First Impressions
« on: October 21, 2004, 03:23:30 AM »
I'm getting over a cold so I was only able to put a few games on it but I wanted to give some initial impressions of the ball.

First, it's a gorgeous ball!  Limish/emerald green with blue swirls.  Very nice color.  I drilled it identically to my Havoc.  Pin is 4 1/2" from the PAP and 1.5" above the midline. MB is 4" from the PAP with extra hole on the axis.

I've only have a few balls since switching to 15lbs so I only compared it to a Rule, FAZ, and a Havoc.  The ball pushes very easy but the thing I like is that it's not a squirt like normal pearlized balls.  You can see it's still reading while mainting tilt.  Very strong downlane but not what I would call a flip.   It was about 3-5 boards stronger than the Havoc and the FAZ (4 1/2 x 3) and that's in the backend.  There was a point with the Havoc where I couldn't move further left or it was 2-10.  Couldn't get the ball to turn the corner.  The Xception just turned harder the more head oil I caught.  It also got stronger as the box finish wore off a little.  Responded very well to hand changes.  The lanes weren't oily enough to really see how it compared to the Rule.  I'm very excited about this ball.

I have some bowling to do over the next few days so once I get more games on it in different centers I'll post more thoughts.

Finally had a chance to punch it up, 4 1/8 x 4mb, pin 3 1/8 above midline, 15/16 pos side, 1/8 finger(didn't have time for a weight hole).  I wanted to keep it as close as possible to my Rule to see the difference.  Took it straight to league(no shadow, late as usual).  Doc Hollywood was kind enough to wait, bowled against his team.

My ball reacted very similar to what Chapman stated.  They changed the shot somewhat to where it was heavier than normal(of all nites that I want to try the breakdown ball).  Pattern appeared to be a little flat but much longer about 43-44ft, decent but not screaming backends.

Ball cleared the heads easily but like Mr. Chapman stated, it didn't squirt.  It rolled very similar to the Rule, high revving and when it made its turn it was a very strong continuous arc, no snap.  Actually the oil was a little too heavy in the first game so I decided to turn the ball some and open up the backend during the second game.  This gave me a very nice strong arc movement and I was able to open up the lane as well.  Third game the shot finally started to breakdown some where my teammate(bowl400, hi roll, weak tweener) had to get left about 5-7 boards with his Rule, I stayed the same.  I then decided to go back to my fluff and was able to move right about 2 boards and the reaction was great.  Now in some breakdown, I was able to play right in the track with an easy follow thru and the ball just went down the lane, picked up in the mids and slowly arced backed to the pocket.  "THIS" is the reaction I was looking for, the drier heads with spotty backend shots that I've been encountering (seems like everywhere).  So far, it looks like a very nice ball for that breakdown shot but will have to throw it more in comparison to the other balls to get a better feel.

The scores were a little lower last nite overall in league but I ended up 202(whiffed a 7 right in the 10th), 235(whiffed another 7 but left, hey, I adjusted) and finished 258 (no whiffing..)  Not bad considering this was truly the first 3 games bowled with this ball.  Hitting power speaks for itself, I'm in trouble cause this is going in the bag.....I'm going to need more bags..  Bowling a tourney this weekend, hopefully be able to post more info.  Thanks....
