airline question
« on: June 03, 2008, 02:33:19 PM »
I leave next Thursday on Continental.  Says there is a 1 bag check in and if you want another piece you have to pay 25 bucks.  Now if I bring 6 balls what would be the best way to go?  Would I be able to carry on a tote if I have to?  Obviously the best thing would be to ship them, but I still have stuff to drill and I won't have enough time.  Whats the next best solution?  Thanks

if you have a light 3 ball tote you can check it with the balls. you would only pay the 25 extra bag fee if you already checked a bag. just make sure you dont go over the 50lb weight limit, that will cost ya another 50. you can take 2 carry ons still, so dont forget that.

you could always ship you balls to the hotel where your staying if they don't mind you doing that. Call them and ask them, thats what I did in Corpus. They were really good about things, just called and verified that they would do that for me, and than when you get there ask them if you could have them call UPS when your done bowling.
When you go to the UPS store, ask them if they would print you a return ticket.

Yes you are allowed two carry on items but the rules state one of them can only be a personal item such as a lap top or a purse type item.  The checked luggage must be under fifty pounds so if you throwing sixteen pounders you might have a problem.  What you are thinking about doing is exactly what I did when I left for Nationals a couple of months ago and I had no problems at all….

I just flew with Southwest and they made me check my 2 ball tote that I wanted to have as a carry on.    The said that the x-ray machine can't see through the core!! UGGH LOL. If you throw 15 lb. your best bet would be to get 2 vise 3 ball triple roller.  Buddies has them for $45 a piece.  The only downside is that you have to carry your shoe bag externally.

http://www.buddiesproshop.com/products/3-Bowling_Bags/0~99999/All/14-3-Ball_Bag/4/16page32.htm?

Granted this is going to cost you $90 for 2 bags and $50 for the extra bag each way= $140.00 But if you fly frequently it may be worth it in the long run.  I have 1 3 ball vise roller and I had no issues with it being checked, it came under the 50lbs max.

Hope this helps,

the airlines cant tell you what a personal item is. you can take 2 carryons of whatever you want.

pba300,
TSA told me that not Southwest.  I should have clarified.

I would only take a 3 ball roller if I didn't want it back in one piece.

The baggage handlers break them all the time.

3 ball tote....  it has wheels but is not really a roller bag..

Little to no plastic on it..  very durable nylon..  My vise has made it to and from 2 nationals...  the storm is 1 for 1...  but the tread thing on the bottom broke off it's rivet at home before I left..

From United's Web-site

Carry-on baggage
For travel worldwide on United, you may carry on one bag and one personal item such as a purse, briefcase, or laptop computer.
A carry-on bag must fit under your seat or in the overhead bin.
Carry-on bag dimensions should not be more than 9 x 14 x 22 in/22 x 35 x 55 cm (length + width + height) or 45 linear in/112 linear cm (the length, height and width added together).

From American's Web-site

Our carry-on policy of one personal item (such as a purse or laptop bag) plus one bag remains in place. Current policies for baggage allowance as well as fees for checked baggage can be found below.

Trust me they may hassle you if you walk on with two bags and one of them is not a personal item.  For what it is worth, I'm in that business....

WOW,

When I went to Nationals, I did the following:

1. Took a triple roller with only 2 balls in it. Put some clothes in it to make it about 50lbs still.
2. Took a suitcase with me, paid the extra money and put the 3rd ball in the suitcase keeping it under 50lbs still.
3. Took a tote onboard and put it under the chair as my carry on.

bowlingmytmouse I would love to hear where you were flying from and to that they told you couldn't carry a tote on. I have done it for the past 2 yrs with no problems at all. Flying all over the country and never once had a problem with it. Usually they just take the swab and check it for bomb making materials all around the bag.

trust me when i say its ok. For what its worth, i'm in the business too. i have yet to see a time when you couldn't carry 2 bags on about the size of a 2 ball tote. i see "laptop bags" on a daily basis that are much larger than a 2 ball tote.

Is it safe to put the two ball tote in the overhead locker? Or it's better under your seat.
